Well, my school does not have an NFL charter, and I live in Texas, so I compete within the realms of UIL. However, I’d like to compete on a much broader scale, seeing that I’ve improved my skills over the summer with much oratorical practice and research on philosophy, law, etc. Currently, I have earned $2,000 from my summer job. Would this be enough to fund myself during a season of NFL debate? Many people tell me it’s indeed VERY expensive. But how expensive? The school district already has told me that I’ll have to finance myself, so I’m quite comfortable with investing my cash into something productive and exciting.

Thanks.

Well I’ll give you the BASIC cost breakdown of a tournament (you can add, subtract, and make adjustments to my estimate according to your plans):

Tournament Entry Fee (depending on how many events you plan on competing in): $20-$75

Hotel Lodging: $100-$300 (you will probably stay for 2-3 nights)

Airplane Ticket: Usually around $100 (it varies)

Materials (this is if you hire a private coach who gives you cases, blocks, pre-written rebuttals, and the like): Around $250

So yeah, it’s pretty expensive for a NATIONAL CIRCUIT tournament.

Now, league NFL tournaments are a completely different issue. You usually pay a $200 deposit at the beginning of the year that covers all the tournaments that happen in your league that are NFL tournaments except for NFL State Qualifier and NFL National Qualifier (and State Champs and Nat’l Champs).

I think that your $2000 should be enough to invest in NFL debate. I suggest you choose to debate in your county league first before you invest in national circuit tournaments.
Hope I didn’t confuse you with what I just realized is a disorganized jumble of information -___-;;.
Feel free to PM me for info.

And if I’m wrong, please correct me.

where do you live in texas? i was in the same situation as you. PM me with questions. (fortunately for me, my school was actually supportive and decided to finance NFL)

Thanks, you two. And Anisha, I totally understood everything you listed down. Thanks so much.

So we’re not talking about football here?

National Forensics League, for debate and other public speaking events. It IS expensive, because each round is individually judged, and it’s hard to find lots of good judges who will serve as volunteers. At the high school where my son debates, debate is second only to football for the amount of the school budget spent subsidizing the activity, and we still pay a stiff activity fee and do a lot of fund-raising.

THE GIANTS RULE! EVERY OTHER TEAM DROOLS!

Oh, a different kind of NFL debate…
