For UCSD hopefulls with < 3.5 GPA

My friend and I have been gearing up for UCSD Fall 2012, but now she is going to get a cumulative GPA of 3.13 by the end of this semester. For people like her that don’t have a high enough GPA, what types of solutions are there? She is going to take summer school, but is it even possible to raise her GPA to a 3.5 in time for TAG and the application? What are kids doing about this? I dread to see her in cc a whole extra year. :(

is she a traditional two year student? or does she hav elike 6968 units already, if she has tons of units already I don’t think she’ll be able to raise up the gpa. If she’s only completed 1 year, if she takes summer classes/a decently heavy fall semester and gets straight A’s, she should be fine. It’s honestly not that hard to Ace community college, just prioritize.

@EASD, I heard from my counselor that for applicants who do not have a TAG or are not qualified for a TAG for UCSD, they will do a holistic review on their application. Which means that they will look at grade trends, the personal statement, ec’s, and community service. Basically they would review an application by how Berkeley and UCLA does it.

Depends on the major… like pinoiako said you dont have to have TAG to be accepted… I wouldnt push to take a a bunch of classes during summer especially if she messes up and drops below a 3.0… her chance of going to a UC is slim to none.

She has been in community college for four years and when I started a year ago, she had a mediocre GPA that was around a 2.5. She had to work full-time her first three years at cc due to family financial difficulties and she did not get good grades back then. She had to entirely pay for all her expenses. Now that she doesn’t work she has aced all of her classes but one, so she is progressing.

She has completed all her IGETC and even pre-major courses (about 70 units total). She is a Philosophy major and she has an appointment with a UCSD representative in a few days to talk about UniversityLinks. This is a transfer program for high schoolers but the cc counselor told her to ask about it.

If she gets in Fall 2012 she would have attended cc for 5 years. I really can’t bear to imagine her in cc 6 years, 5 is already more than double it should be.

Options I know of now:

 • holistic review
 • wait another year
 • transfer to a different UC
 • load up on summer courses from different ccs?

With around 70 units now and 3.13 GPA I’m not sure if it’s possible raise to 3.5 with summer classes alone.

She will not be able to raise it to a 3.5 on summer classes, unfortunately, if she already has 70 units. What she can do, however, is TAG with UC Davis as a backup. Currently, she only needs a 3.1 to TAG up here, although that could change. Tell her to be careful, though, as she cannot TAG after she has exceeded 80 UC-transferrable semester units, unless she is applying to the engineering school at UC Davis.

She can still apply to UC San Diego as a stretch school.

I know of a friend of mine who has a 2.98 gpa anthro major applying to Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCD and UCSC.

hesdjjim, she can still apply with more than 80 units if they are strictly from cc:

"TAG is for students who transfer with junior standing. If you will have senior standing, TAG does not apply.

* Senior standing means you would have 90 or more UC-transferable semester units (or 135+ quarter units) from accredited four-year universities and community colleges, combined."

i got into UCSD with a 3.36
