Forbes Article, 'Can Colby Save the Liberal Arts?'

[merc81]

Under [Colby College President] Greene, Colby has pursued an unusually expansive vision of what a liberal arts college can be. The college has invested in artificial intelligence and computational fields, but also in the humanities, arts, environmental research, interdisciplinary science, entrepreneurship, and experiential learning. It is now making what Greene described as a “half a billion dollar bet on the sciences and technology,” while it has simultaneously grown its humanities faculty by roughly 30 percent.

That juxtaposition may be the clearest expression of Greene’s argument. Preparing students for a technological future does not require retreating from the humanities. Colby is betting that the two become more valuable together.
