Neither program is that well known, at least to me out here in California. They’re probably both fine. I’d say it boils down to whether you want to go to school in New York City or Dallas.
As a parent of a student majoring in the hard sciences at SMU, I can not recommend the school. S/he is did enjoy the professor in the computer science department; however, the school does not seem science-friendly.
