Fordham or American University?

I plan to pursue computer science with a double major possibly in business and am interested in enrolling in a Korean class and being active on campus. Which school is best for me?

Both universities have programs in computer science and in business. However, it would likely be difficult to double-major in CS+business at either school, unless you were prepared to study for five years, instead of four.

You would have to complete all of the requirements for both majors, plus all of the other requirements for the School of Arts & Sciences (because the CS major is there), plus all of the other requirements for the School of Business (because the business major is there). This could be hard to squeeze into four years. Furthermore, there is probably little or no coordination between the School of Arts & Sciences and the School of Business on class schedules, so you could have required classes scheduled simultaneously.

A few schools have specifically developed fully coordinated double-major programs that can be completed in four years, like Lehigh’s “Computer Science and Business” program. But this is unusual. At most schools, it would be more practical to major in CS and minor in business. Or you could consider double-majoring in CS and economics, since econ (unlike business) is typically in the School of Arts & Sciences (same as CS).

Korean classes aren’t that common on the East Coast. AU offers beginning and intermediate Korean. Fordham apparently does not.

I would never pick a college based on a double major requirement. First, as @Corbett alluded to it, it is not easy and a a very few people end up double majoring ultimately. Instead, pick based on a primary interest and other factors like size/location. Fordham and American have strong business programs, and place very well.

Both schools are better known for business than for CS. The CS program at American seems particularly small, although that necessarily doesn’t mean that it is inadequate.
