Fordham Part-Time MBA vs NYU Part-Time MBA

I’m currently in the Fordham Part-Time MBA program, but I find that the school lacks a lot of financial resources. It has a poor selection of study abroad programs, small selection of student organizations, poorly organized events, many professors are horrible, and a bad career services office. They don’t even let you keep their school email after you graduate, but force you to use it for your classes. I’ve only been with the school for two trimesters and already feel that the MBA experience will be a drag at this school. Is it worth the trouble to switch to NYU’s part-time mba program? Or is the NYU part-time just as bad because all part-time programs are never a b-school’s priority since they all focus on their full-time programs? It would be great if there is someone out there that has done this transfer before to give me some feedback. If not, just any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is more of brief on Fordham:

There are 135 student organizations and perhaps this seems small to other colleges that have clubs for everything possible but at Fordham, the organizations that do exist actually make an impact on the student body and faculty. There are groups like Fashion for Philathrapy, Mimes and Mummers, Hip-Hop Coalition, College Dems and Reps, etc. not to mention clubs for all major subjects. Even the Student Government this year has become more involved with student life and the new Eboard will be transforming Fordham’s community next year. As for “poorly organized events” well this is something that I can beg to differ on. From the Freshmen Orientation to Guest Speakers ( UN speaker at LC this spring, Newt Gingrich at RH, the President of the Dominican Republic, Writer Junot Diaz) to Spring Weekend, and especially Career Services Fairs and Seminars Fordham is not one to take event planning and following through lightly.
Also, there are bad and good professors everywhere, at both small and large, community or ivy schools. Perfection does not exist anywhere but there are many extraordinary professors which make the entire struggle worthwhile. Yes, there are many professors at Fordham that make you question their motives for teaching but one thing you can not question is their credentials for being here. Fordham has a reputation for having professors that have phenomenal personalities and really do care about their students both in the class and their future.
Lastly, the Career Services Office is definitely making comebacks every year, with the number of career fairs they do as well as the number of employers they recruit for these fairs. Many employers do range along the lines of business and communications careers but there are connections that the Career Services Office has that are incredible. Everything from UN contacts to Albert Einstein physicians, the Career Services Office has friends or friends of friend of who they can help you contact. Most importantly, there are multiple ways for students to contact alums in every field. There are alumni networking dinners and a database to look up contact information of alum who have agreed to either give advice or serve as mentors for students in their field. There is nothing “bad” about meeting or being set up with someone who is doing EXACTLY what you want to do or knows information of how you can meet someone who does.

As for the MBA at Fordham, well not only is it competitive and difficult in a good way but the networking opportunities that Fordham has in the business world are unimaginable. It is highly unlikely that you will find any top employer in the financial district that has not heard or is not already in contact with Fordham University. By the way, the connections as well as the distance between Fordham and Manhattan is perfect for internships.

I don’t question that Fordham University in general is poor, but the business school definitely needs a lot of work. The business school has at most 3-4 active clubs. The rest have fairly no events at all. I also hear that the club budgets are ridiculously low and many clubs have trouble throwing events because the school is so focused on cutting costs recently. As for Fordham being competitive, nobody has heard of Fordham outside of the tri-state area. And those that do have only heard of it’s law school, but not the business school. There are clearly a lot more finance jobs available at NYU than at Fordham. I must say that for the amount we pay for tuition, I have no idea where my money goes. I’ve taken classes in many different universities and I must say that Fordham definitely has the worst professors I have encountered. More than half of them don’t put their lectures on Blackboard website(It’s 2009!!!). To make it worst, the ones that don’t put them up speed through the slides so you can’t even take good notes. They also make you buy textbooks that is often not needed. There is just a huge laundry list of things I hate about this school. Oh yea, and their class registration and online payment system is outdated. Fordham Business School, please get into the 21st century and have your administration work past 5pm to cater to your part-time MBA students who work all day and can only meet after work! After all, we make up most of this business school!
