Either LC or RH campus…HS have about 3.0 cumulative average 970 sat…89 average in senior year…3.8 College GPA…various volunteering EC’s. FOR sophmore transfer. If my chances are slim…what can i do to improve them. thanks. Should i retake SAT’s? I am a biochemistry major.

I think you have to get your facts first before you consider your chances.

Firstly, the LC campus does not even have a Biochem major according to this page.
http://www.fordham.edu/Academics/Colleges__Graduate_S/Undergraduate_Colleg/Fordham_College_at_L/Fields_of_Study/

Secondly, Rose Hill doesn’t appear to have a Biochem major either. They either have Biology or Chemistry.
http://www.fordham.edu/Academics/Colleges__Graduate_S/Undergraduate_Colleg/Fordham_College_at_R/Fields_of_Study/index.asp

Look at the sample requirements for both the Biology and Chemistry requirements. You want to try to replicate what the freshmen take at Fordham to ensure that most of your credits are transferable.

http://www.fordham.edu/images/academics/fordham_college_at_r/fieldsofstudy/chemistrychecklistsampleprogram.doc

As for your SAT’s, are those over the 2400 scale or 1600 scale? If they are over 2400, I think they will be a weak point in your transfer application given that you said your college GPA was a 3.8. Wait have you even started as a freshman? If not, how would you know what your college GPA is?

SAT scores are more heavily-weighted in the case of a sophomore as opposed to a junior transfer. I would consider retaking that if I were you. However, your priority should be your selection of appropriate classes and your grades.

jonathan06,

When I went to go visit Fordham last Thursday, I had the chance to speak with an admissions officer. To let you know, the deadline for Spring semester is December 15, and Fall 07 semester June 1. (I’m not sure on the second, I would call to verify.) I asked for transfer acceptance rates, and she simply said, “There is none. Our cut off is 3.0.” So, I take it that if you have a GPA of over 3.0, you should be set. Again, not positively sure about the SAT scores, however I do believe thy emphasis GPA more than any other criteria for transfers.

I am also applying myself for spring semester. I plan to defer to Fall 07, to leave some room for other applications. Also, I would recommend visiting the two campuses. Good Luck.

Well i meant to say Rose Hill campus, but is it true that they really dont have a biochem major? i will have to call them…My sats over the 2400 scale are in the low 1500’s range, i have not started as a freshman i know thats silly to predict a GPA but i really am going to work my ass off. Secondly, is spring transfer admission more competetive than fall admission? would i be eligible to apply for spring admission and defer it to fall if I have very little college coursework grades at the time I apply?

Could you maybe email those courses the freshman have to take? I will PM you my email address. I have a mac and do not have Word. Thank you so much.

nevermind, i got it to work.

—I read the reuiqrement for Chemistry, for frosh year it states
CH 1321 Gen Chem I
CH 1331 Gen Chem Lab I
BI 1403 Intro Bio I
BI 1413 Into Bio Lab I
EN 1100 Eng Comp
RS 1000 Faith/criticl Reason = 17

My schedule looks similiar…with the exception of Eng Comp/Fatih Reasoning…Should I take an eng comp course?? Im also enrolled in two freshman seminars…Should I drop them and make room for the eng comp class? Sorry for so many questions I really have to do this on my own my parents wont help me.

Hey there,

Colleges will usually require at least 2 semesters worth of English Composition Class (College Level). Therefore, in addition to your science prerequisites, it would be good if you took your English classes too.

What is your schedule like now? Bio, Bio lab, Chem, Chem lab and Precalc?

That seems like quite a load for your first semester at college. It really depends on whether you can handle it I guess. I recommend you get your math and English classes out of the way first because those are essential for transfer at any university.

If you’re definitely sure you want to leave your university, I guess you can drop your Freshman Comp classes because you cannot be sure how those classes will transfer, if at all.

English Composition classes will usually transfer.

It’s strange that you’re already thinking about transfer before even starting university. Don’t go into college will that mindset though. You will enjoy yourself more if you just go into it with an open mind. After all, you will be staying at your current university for two years. Better make the most out of it!

Ok I got into Fordham LC for the fall semester. I applied as a transfer student. I had just graduated from community college with a 3.5 and I got in. The deadline to hand in apps was July 1st and I found out that I got in the first week of Aug. I am very disgusted with Fordham leaving me to wait that long. The other thing is the housing. They DO NOT OFFER ON CAMPUS HOUSING to transfers…they just want your money and they dont care where you will live. They expect you to find a place to live, get all your finances together, get your books, schedule classes etc etc in less than 3 weeks. I couldnt find a place to live that wasnt under 1200 bucks a month so Im deferring enrollment. …kiss my butt fordham haha sry but they are only looking out for themselves. When you call the housing dept to ask for assistance to find a place to live they give you craigslist.com and places4students.com yah thats very helpfull
not…just make sure u have a place to live lined up when or if u apply to Fordham.

Hey erinbroke ,what were your stats from HS? also, snawrasaurus, what do you reccomend me to take as far as a courseload? I am a biochemistry major and those are the classes i need to take…I am thinking of dropping the two frosh seminars and add a eng comp course. What do you think?

This is my schedule (with prospects of transferring to Fordham (RH or LC) also NYU (CAS) and Stony Brook.
Gen Chem I
Gen Chem I Lab
Bio Concepts
Bio Concepts Lab
Precalc for Math and Science Majors
Freshman Seminar
Freshman Orientation -----Want to drop last two…and add a GE course such as Eng Comp. Would Philosophy also be an option? or what is easiest? Does this courseload seem difficult? What do you reccomend for a Biochem major…thank you. Important question - I want to be able to go on with a science related major and biochem seems the most logical at the time, however many people are saying its very hard/time consuming. Should I even bother to add a GE course such as eng comp or just leave it and drop the 2 seminars? I want to be able to have some transferability of credits…also im hearing Fordham doesnt have a Biochem major? Would my individual Biology and Chemistry course transfer into their Chemistry and Biology majors? SORRY FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS BUT YOUR HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED…I am at a rough time in my life.

Also, im looking to apply to Fordham end of freshman year and come in as a Sophmore, is this realistic with around a 3.5?

Okay, so I’ll start with your question about the freshman composition classes. Firstly, I DO think that you should take an English composition class. Every university requires their students to fulfill some kind of reading and writing requirement.

Secondly, the prerequisites for a Biochem major, Bio major, and Chem major are mostly similar. You will have to finish a year of general biology, general chemistry, physics and possibly up to calculus II. However, it seems as if you are pretty unsure about your major.

Biochem is very much chemistry heavy. You might change your mind about it after a semester. A lot of biochem majors I know are pre-meds or pre-pharmacy (esp pre-pharm because it is heavily chem based)

Don’t worry about your GPA for now. I don’t know if it is advisable that you take bio, chem, their respective labs, precalculus AND english at the same time. That schedule might be too heavy depending on the school you go to.

Philosophy is not an easy class at a 4 year university. It requires a lot of reading (time-consuming esp for a science major). Think about intro to psychology or intro to sociology. These tend to be easier.

And yes, I think the bio and chem classes will transfer.

Hey jonathon06. My high school grades were average…around a 85 or 86% but I did do tons of community service work, i was the editor of my school newspaper, choir, band, drama club, french club…etc. So good luck and make sure you have a place to live before you transfer to fordham!

jonathan, you should get in.

Thanks…but i still need more opinions…
- Why doesnt fordham have a biochem major?
- Which is less rigorous…Biology/Chemistry or Biochemistry.
- These Freshman seminars (2) are still bugging me…Should I drop them and add a GE course?
- Is Fordham reputable in the sciences? Or is Stony Brook Better?
Also, one random question but work with me please…Is it easier for commuters to get a higher GPA while they study at home as opposed to a person who Dorms (On average). Thanks.

Your help is appreciated.

I’ve applied for fall transfer 2009, from Appalachian State University. I have a 3.52 GPA, TA and a few other random extracurriculars. Just based on this information, and I know it’s vague, does anyone know what my chances are of being accepted?

@Twisty Is that 3.0 cutoff for high school or college gpa?
