Foreign Exchange

I am planning on doing a foreign exchange to Japan for a year, leaving the spring of my senior year and returning january of my freshman year of college. How will this affect my college admission? I will most likely end up submitting my applications for college after I hear about my status as a foreign exchange student. (I plan on applying for foreign exchange in August or early Fall)

Should I mention this in my application or inform them afterwards that I won’t be able to attend until the spring semester? Would this affect my acceptance at all seeing that I haven’t already experienced it. I also do want to minor in Japanese or something of the like.

Thanks!

I would individually contact the admissions offices of the colleges you plan on applying to. Most colleges allow students either before or after admission to request a gap year. It’s a pretty simple process to approve. Depending on the college, they might want you to take a full year off and enter as a freshman the fall after you return from Japan, others might be fine with entering for the spring semester. But you should definitely inform them. I’m not entirely sure how to mention it in your application, though.
