Foreign Language Programs

I would welcome recommendations for colleges or universities (preferably under 20,000 students) with strong foreign language programs, particularly French. I would like for the program to have some depth - Chinese, Arabic, etc. I’m looking for top academic schools and would consider Ivies, strong liberal arts. I’m also interested in international relations programs. Thanks!

Selective liberal arts schools whose language programs are often recommended include Middlebury, Connecticut College and Dickinson. All three are solid schools for various types of international studies, but you will need to check the political science, area and international studies departments to determine if the schools have the courses and programs you are looking for.

there is a small LAC in Michigan, Kalamazoo, in which 85% of the students spend a term abroad.

Dartmouth also has a strong program. They have a teacher Rassias who has his own unique method. According to http://www.dartmouth.edu/~news/releases/2000/nov00/iee.html</a> “Nearly half the students at Dartmouth College participate in foreign study programs while enrolled at the school, the highest rate among U.S. doctoral-granting institutions”

Also if you want strong french, don’t forget yale. That is where Capretz teaches, the guy who brought you “French in Action” video series.
