Foreign Language Requirement for Admission

Q on Princeton - the head of admissions also said that a global language through senior year was essential. My S finished AP very early in HS, and started another language, but not formally. She said that would be a deficit in his app unless he showed explicitly that he had continued his pursuit of languages after AP in some way OR demonstrated a different passion pursued in its place. As an aside, Bryn Mawr said the same thing for my D. Has anyone else-- admitted to P – NOT had global language through 12?

@MomTwo2 In general, completion of level 4 or AP of a foreign language, regardless of grade level, will have met the recommended preparation for 99% of colleges. Should the student have continued interest and the HS offers post-AP coursework in the foreign language, by all means consider further studies. However, I cannot imagine that any college will expect a student to search out post-AP coursework if it does not exist within the framework of his/her HS.

If your son can take a standardized test (SAT2/AP/etc.) in his second, non-formally studied foreign language, so much the better.

I know several.

“Four years of one foreign language”.

I’ve seen people get admitted with as few as two and as much as four. Four is just recommended.
