Hi. I’m a mom who homeschools my 4 kids and I’m trying to figure out the transfer system. My oldest is 15 (freshman). He’s thinking of UCLA comp sci.

Since we homeschool privately (ie. not through a charter school), UCLA will not accept his high school transcript, so I’m looking into having him take CC classes, hopefully enough to transfer to UCLA as a junior when he’s 18 (ie. after finishing his high school senior year). He’s taking one this semester and it’s going fine.

My question: Freshman applicants have a foreign language and US History requirement. Does that apply to transfer students as well? I’m under the impression that when you transfer, you don’t show them a high school transcript at all. So it seems the for. lang & USH don’t matter as a transfer.

history is not a requirement for every school. I believe (if correct), it is a requirement for berkeley letter of science . but it can can be done by IGETC.

Personally, I would contact UCLA about this one. If I understand correctly, joint highschool/CC students can sometimes be treated a bit differently than “proper transfers”…although you can probably get around this by awarding him his diploma at 16. I say that supposing your home schooling in California. Better to talk to the school rather than get blind sided.

I realized afterwards my OP wasn’t too clear… I’m specifically asking about the a-g requirements for freshmen (of which for. lang and USH are 2). I believe these d not apply for transfers but I want to make sure.

…and Hongda, you can come to my house for cookies and milk and help with your homework any time.

I failed my language requirement at high school, so I had to take one semester at my cc to complete it. You need only one semester of a foreign language, which is equivalent to one year of high school foreign language class. Of course it depends on the major, but generally, the requirement is only one semester.

As for US History, I don’t even think it is required. I am in that major, so I had to take three US history classes for transfer, but if your major is different, then I don’t think it’s a requirement.
Taking one (like HIST 110) won’t hurt though. In fact, I think it would complete the humanities category requirement if I remember correctly.
