Foreign student athlete - Financial Preparations

Hi all.

I’m a soccer player from israel, future student-athlete of 2014 enrollement with full scholarship.
I am thinking about save and raise some money in order to live properly the next 4 years, but I don’t know exactly how my financial life are going to look like.

Please help me understand the situation better:
Will I have an income?
How much expenses will I have?
Will I need a car? (For a university such as Uconn)
Will I have time to travel outside the university on weekends?

I will remember few more questions later for sure, but I will be glad to be answered about these questions for now.

Thanks Ahead, Dan

How do you know you will have a full scholarship? They are pretty rare.

If you do, the scholarship will cover (usually) tuition, fees, room and board, books, travel, and sometimes incidentals. Any school can leave off any one of these items and those would be your expenses. Even if everything is covered, you’ll want money for eating away from campus, movies, concerts, etc. You will NOT need a car and that expense wouldn’t be covered. You will not have income, although you may get an allowance for incidentals (very small).

You will probably be pretty busy during your season, but may have free weekends when your sport is not in season when you could travel (expenses not covered).
