Any thoughts on attending the “Forever Duke” send off parties? Sounds like a good idea, but it’s an hour away from our home, and my D will have to come home from camp (2 more hours) for it.

I think I went to one last year as a sophomore. I didn’t think it was really anything special… just a chance for current and former students to meet the new students before they go to orientation. If your daughter is a new student, it might be nice to find others from the same area so she knows people when she gets on campus, but being from CA I don’t think she’ll have a hard time finding them anyway. Other than that its a good forum to ask questions about Duke in general, but I feel like CC covers that pretty well. It’s a good opportunity, but I just personally don’t think its worth 4 hours of driving as it would be in your case.

What’s the typical dress for this party? Would I feel out of place in conservative, everyday clothes (jeans + nice shirt)?

I went to one before my freshman year. It was meh.

Go if it’s convenient, don’t go if you have to plan around it.

i met one of my best friends at my forever duke thing and now we’ve graduated. otherwise, it was nice to meet people and chat-- if you have to plan around it and sacrifice other important things, don’t worry about it. if it’s convenient, then by all means, it’s worth going.

as for dress-- ours was a summer daytime bbq at an alum’s house… it’s casual. adults were in like khakis and golf shirts, kids were in jeans and shorts and sundresses or whatever. i’ve been to evening ones since and have gone in whatever i wore to work that day.
