Forgot to drop a class. I need help.

2016, After graduating high school I was planning on attending a local community college. I didn’t know anything about how college at the time so I followed every step like doing the placement test, attending a counseling session etc. I thought It was going well until I found out how much college costed! (yes, I was ignorant. But I moved from another country so I was unfamiliar with how universities in the US worked) My parents were gonna support me but they didn’t know the costs either. I didn’t apply for financial aid, because, again, I didn’t know what it was so I decided to not attend that year.

I wanted more information about a class and started clicking on my school account page just to know what I could’ve taken.
I didn’t find out until 3 months later that I accidentally registered for that class and that the school was charging me for it and I needed to pay. Before I could do anything, it was to late and the school sent my information to the state administration requesting for my payment, so my only option was to pay for a class I never attended. I payed and I thought that was over.
2017 comes around and I finally got accepted for financial aid to attend my first semester. I followed the same steps, (placement test, counseling, financial aid, orientation) and everything went well.
I got good grades on my first semester, I took 4 classes and got 2 B’s, 1 A, and 1C. and I thought that my GPA was going to be like 3.2 or something but instead it was 2.5. I thought it was okay but I was wondering why my GPA was lower than expected.

Right now I’m attending my second term and
Today I just found out that the class I never attended back in 2016 is there with an “F”.
If I never attended, why is it still there? What can I do to fix this problem? any suggestions?
I don’t want to carry that F… this has really saddened me because I was motivated to do my best and apply to a good school.

You need to speak to someone in the Bursar’s office at the school. Good luck.

At my college (http://www.everettcc.edu) we would have dropped you from the class for non-attendance. Unfortunately, other colleges just post a failing grade for non-attendance. Most community colleges have some sort of appeal petition that you can file to request that a grade be removed from your transcript. If you explain that you never once attended, and didn’t realize that you were still enrolled, it might work. The other option is to find out what the grade replacement policy is. At many community colleges, you can retake a course and have the new grade replace the old grade on your transcript.

Some schools have different policies. It is surprising to me that they didn’t drop you for non-attendance, or non-payment in the first place. That being said, it was your responsibility to register/drop in the first place. I don’t know how you would register for a class on accident and not even notice. Also, you should’ve contacted the school when you got the bill. They probably would’ve dropped you, if you hadn’t paid.

Talk to the college enrollment center and see if you can get it resolved. Good Luck.

Nevertheless, I think the most realistic thing is that you’d have to retake that class. That way your new grade would replace the F. This shouldn’t hurt you, unless you’re applying to a top school, which doesn’t seem to be the case.

I talked with them and I filled a form for an exception on a college policy explaining my situation. I’m going to receive an email from them in 1 or 2 weeks. Right now I’m just hoping for the best, if not, like you said, I’ll just retake the class. thanks for the reply
