We signed such a release that covered all release of records. I suspect it is for the convenience of the GC and records office. It would be difficult to have to wade through every students file in search of a release pertaining just to that one college. Even with a small class of 80 - if every student applies to an average of 6 schools, that’s almost 500 release forms you would need to keep up with. In a big school, it could be an absolute nightmare.

I guess I’m not seeing a good reason not to sign it. I think it’s highly unlikely that an AdCom or coach is going to ask the GC for an unofficial transcript unless a student has applied there and if you have applied there then you are going to have to let them see the transcript. In fact, I don’t think the colleges generally do the asking, they have the students request that the transcripts be send to the college. My understanding with athletic recruits - the coaches recruit for the team but the admission office still has to process the application just like any other student. I’m not sure that coaches ever even see the transcripts but I could be wrong. There are lots of parents of recruited athletes on this forum. I’m sure someone can shed some light on that.

You might want to talk this through with your GC. Sometimes the process seems a lot more complicated than it really is.

Thanks MomLive
That makes alot of sense…I was trying to figure out the benefit vs the risk.
It is worded in an odd way that makes it sound like by signing it any school or coach asking gets a copy–anytime

At my school, the students have to sign an official transcript release form for every official transcript we send out. But then we have the recruited athletes. For those students, we receive many requests for a fax of an unofficial transcript - usually from our own coach or from a college coach. It is really impossible to track down the student every time. So, for the students going through athletic recruitment, we have an understanding that it is ok to release an unofficial transcript whenever it is needed. Now of course, once they have accepted an offer, that would end. Or if they tell us that they are not interested in a particular school and to not send anything there, we will honor that. But for the most part, sending out unofficial transcripts whenever we get coach requests has been the norm.

So if you apply to 15 colleges, you have to sign 15 transcript release forms? We just sign one release but you do have to complete a form for every college you apply to and check off what you need to be sent - transcript, letters of recommendation, etc. But it’s not really a release form - more a request form.

Interesting about the athletic recruits…didn’t realize the coaches looked at grades so closely. I guess they don’t want to waste their time on recruiting athletes that don’t pass academic muster. Makes sense.

We already have a couple of coaches asking for transcripts to see if our student is recruitable …they asked for them from our student–and our student is faxinf it next week.

I would never sign a form allowing my child’s transcript be released to any one who asked for it. If my child wants to send a transcript, she will fill out a form to do that. Sounds like a major invasion of privacy, we have the right to control access to her records.
