With the worldwide attention this case is getting, this rapist may end up wishing that the sentence had been more severe.

My son said exactly that to me this evening.
He absolutely would have been banned from USA swimming no matter what the sentencing was…many people have been banned for MUCH less!!!
USA swimming says they have zero tolerance for sexual crimes, so they would have to ban if they are to be taken seriously.
@alwaysamom I was thinking the same thing. If he had taken a plea deal and admitted guilt it probably would have flown under the radar. USA swimming said that any sex offense would make him ineligible, which might be why they risked the trial and are seeking an appeal.
The appeal will get even more publicity. Unless he wins for reasons that are currently difficult to imagine, the extra publicity related to the appeal and retrial can increase the harm to his reputation and have him remain for a long time as the poster boy for how to dig a deep hole and keep digging. I can’t imagine how the family has the funds for the defense and appeal–very expensive, I expect.
@tx5athome Except this case was much more high-profile from the get go: he was caught literally with his pants down, by two other students, and arrested on the scene. That’s an anomaly. There was no he said/she said; there was no doubt of who the perpetrator was, there were witnesses.
Which is why I’m so surprised his (supposedly expensive) defense has allowed so many dumb leaks and moves: the letter from the Dad, the self-pitying statement from the kid himself, now the online proof he lied. Isn’t this sort of thing something lawyers are paid big money to prevent happening?
I would think the attorney must of recommended a plea with all of the evidence against him.
One thing that surprised me when I spoke to a young woman who got her bachelor’s degree from Stanford was she was openly talking about a very talented graffiti artist who was her classmate. Not sure if the artist continued to do graffiti while attending Stanford but was surprised that the student was admitted and openly bragging about it. Everywhere I believe it is illegal to deface other’s property and find it fascinating that this was admired.
My D2 I so mad about this case it is affecting her well being. I told her you can not let it effect your life. But as a young female, how can it not?
Let’s not make this only about the judge. This boy is a rapist!
This story has hit a cord with so many. I’ve talked more about rape this last week (here, on Facebook, with friends, co-workers, my kids, and my husband) than I probably have in the last five years. I think that’s a good thing. This letter sums up my frustration with people who don’t think women are careful enough to not get raped.
I put up a chart last evening about the causes of rape (spoiler alert: the cause of rape is the rapist in 100% of cases) It got removed for some reason.
Can someone explain to me why a guy would want to rape an unconscious girl? That is a pretty pathetic male who would even think about it.
This is exactly the point I don’t get. Who preys on someone who is unconscious? And takes pictures and sends them to his friends? The answer is someone who has no respect for women, even when they’re sober because you just wouldn’t do that to someone whether you were drunk or not.
But is there something attractive about it to certain men? Men, perhaps, who don’t have such good luck with conscious women?
@LasMa, I have no idea why that post was removed.
I can’t figure it either, dstark.
I haven’t been following this case closely. Has the defendant been expelled from Stanford? Or is he going to do his three months over the summer and be back at school in the fall?
@Much2learn He was kicked out of Stanford almost immediately.
