Former UVA President James E. Ryan Speaks Out Following Ouster

Former University of Virginia president James E. Ryan alleges some members of the school’s governing board were “complicit” in his ouster in his first extensive public comments after he resigned this summer amid[ intense federal scrutiny by the Trump administration.

In a 12-page letter to faculty, Ryan detailed the Trump administration’s investigations over U-Va.’s diversity, equity and inclusion policies, described the pressures that led to his ouster and said the Justice Department did not recognize what he cast as good-faith efforts to address the concerns. He said he wanted to “set the record straight” after what he called inaccurate accounts from Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) and the current board chair, Rachel Sheridan, over the events that led to his resignation in June.

Ryan alleged some members prevented university leadership from responding publicly to the federal investigations and criticism over steps to dissolve U-Va.’s DEI office — a decision he said gave the false appearance the institution was dragging its feet in providing information to the campus community.
