Former White House Press Sec'y Blames Bush for CIA Leak Deception

<p>AP–WASHINGTON - Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan blames President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for efforts to mislead the public about the role of White House aides in leaking the identity of a CIA operative.</p>

<p>In an excerpt from his forthcoming book, McClellan recount the 2003 news conference in which he told reporters that aides Karl Rove and I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby were “not involved” in the leak involving operative Valerie Plame.</p>

<p>“There was one problem. It was not true,” McClellan writes, according to a brief excerpt released Monday. “I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest-ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice president, the president’s chief of staff and the president himself.”

<p>Thanks for posting, NStarMom. I did a search on Valerie Plame on CC earlier to see who thought Libby was unjustly convicted or that the crime of revealing her cover wasn’t in fact a crime. I wondered if the people who claimed these things have their views at all challenged now that a committed former insider in the Bush Administration appears to saying it was all a pack of lies – i.e., that in fact the Administration’s hands weren’t at all clean of the crime of outing an undercover CIA asset. I realized, though, that there are a thousand rationalizations that are likely to spring forth. Probably McClellan himself will be impugned – as have the others like Paul O’Neill who have come from within the Bush camp and criticized it for what it is and has done. The most amazing rationalization to me is that this outing of Plame is not deemed a crime and that Bush is not held to account for promising that anyone involved would be banished from his Administration, a promise that was later altered to suggest it would only happen to anyone guilty of a crime. And then there was a powerful effort receiving sponsorship from the highest echelons to guarantee that a crime couldn’t be directly prosecuted. </p>

<p>The hard part about all this is “SO”… it doesn’t matter what they find if they aren’t willing to do more than hold a committee meeting on it… At this point in time does anybody really think that Dick Cheney gives a rat’s ass about any findings? As much as I despise him, I also understand he’s the big dog in a room full of whiners…whaa! cheney did this whaa cheney did that… SO, whata gonna do about it? </p>

<p>Till somebody on the democratic side has the balls to actually make history who really cares. </p>

<p>Agreed. But there was a time when you’d find principled members of a party criticizing their own. Where are Republicans on this? Where are their standards? Apparently they have none.</p>
