Forming a College List — a Little Lost

Good luck. My DD had a 36 (not superscored), attended a top 10 boarding school in the top of her class, excellent LORs etc. and did not get into her top choices. In fact she was waitlisted at what we considered a safety (50% acceptance). She did get into Colgate and Hamilton. Naviance was a bit off…. I don’t think Colgate would be the vibe you are looking for.

applied to both colgate and hamilton. i interviewed w hamilton and know people that went there and it seems like a good fit. colgate not so sure about. but we’ll see if i even get in

My kiddo is home after a semester, applying to transfer. Because where she went in the fall did not end up being a good fit. I hope you find your match. I remember your issues on the BS forum. Fit is so important.

Good luck to you and your kid. I remember her journey getting in and graduating from BS. I hope she ends up somewhere she loves as much as she loved Deerfield 🩷

Congrats!! Was your $20,000 a purely merit-based scholarship or was there a need-based component? I thought F&M almost never gave merit awards.

Responding to my own post: It looks like they are giving them now! “For applicants entering in the fall of 2023, merit scholarship amounts ranged from $15,000 to $35,000 per year. Merit scholarship recipients are selected based on a holistic review of applications.” Scholarships

It’s all merit! Didn’t even submit FAFSA….but it said merit so I’m assuming just that.

If you have an interest in literature or political theory, you might find it interesting that John Galt majored in these two fields.

Absolutely, they are a small college without enough spaces for everyone they want, but they waitlisted you because they would love to have you if a space opens up.

yep! just hoping i get a few more acceptances. im okay with the 2 i have rn but i really want a small school. and fandm is nice but i haven’t heard anything about their physics program. stony is great for physics but i dont want to go to a big school, id come home on weekends, but thats just not the experience i want for myself.

i want a really involved college experience with a good program

Just because you haven’t heard much about F&M doesn’t mean their program isn’t excellent.

Why don’t you ask the school for a list of career outcomes, including grad schools attended and maybe talk to a student advisor about the program - there’s probably a lot of positives.

Do your homework vs. simply going by reputation.

I’m sure it’s a great school. Congrats to you.

I’m sure it is great. I can afford it with no issues but the price of stony is tempting- it’s also one of the best programs in the country. i just wish it could’ve been smaller but oh well :sob:

F&M is in fact known for having a good Physics program. The specific thing they have that I know about is a full Astrophysics major, which is pretty rare for a small college.

that’s great to hear! i have a lot more schools coming out and hopefully i’ll have more options but that’s awesome!

Are your parents comfortable with the price of F&M? There are other “small” schools at a great price - and some you can probably still apply. Sure, they might be ranked lower but that doesn’t mean they won’t be great. Then you can have price and cost.

In the end, see what your parents say about money - it’s easy to say - we’ll handle anything - but then comparing the price differential, they may not want to.

But you should let them make the call unless you know something about their situation and believe they’d be stretching.

Who else is left to hear from?

They are comfortable with the money, it’s not an issue. our household income is in the highest tax bracket. but they said they’d work something out where if get money from the school i attend they’ll put it in my savings. i still have to hear back from around 15 schools……i have only heard from williams, stony, fandm, and haverford.

todays a big admissions day so ill know soon more options
