Fort Hays - Accreditation, and future in Psych?

I want to go into counseling, perhaps even become a psychologist.

I’m looking at the psych undergrad right now.

The virtual college at fort hays, is their accreditation good? Should I be able to go on to masters or doctorate from there?

I’ve heard of some organization’s recongition, i.e.: CACREP, APA as possibly being important in choosing a school (can’t remember the other ones). But, I don’t know if they matter at the undergrad level or if fort hays satisfies them?

Last, any advice on choosing ba vs bs in psych?

Thanks!

Fort Hays is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission - it is not one of those “for profit” schools. You will be able to pursue a masters or a doctorate after receiving a bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays.

I believe CACREP and APA only accredit graduate school programs.

Awesome! Hopefully I’ll start my admission process tonight.

After posting on this forum for a few years, I’ve finally applied to an accredited school.

If all goes well (if I pass my GED subtest etc.), the application I filled out today should get me into a psych program at Fort Hays.

Good luck!

Given that Fort Hays is an actual brick and mortar school, I don’t think going there will hold you back from going onto graduate school in psychology. A school doesn’t just need to be accredited; it needs to be reputable (not prestigious - just reputable). Fort Hays should satisfy that.

However, the challenge with attending a virtual college is that you are unable to assist your professors in research as an RA. That’s less necessary if you would be okay with an MSW or an MA in mental health counseling in order to become a therapist. But if you’re considering a PhD in clinical or counseling psychology, you should find another way to get this experience - maybe locally to you.

juillet, I’m undecided - but I’m most interested in Psy.D, not PhD and definitely not MSW.

What do you advise for Psy.D?

And a different but similar question: My therapist graduated from University of the Rockies, which is a B&M school, and (now???) also an online school. However, in neither form does it offer APA accreditation. She is perhaps the most intelligent person I know, but I wonder if this has killed many opportunities for her.

Anyway, is APA accreditation important for me? From what I’ve read on another forum, it sounds as though most employers won’t take me on without that, regardless of my coursework or competency. However, I’m curious if they exaggerate.
