Forum About What to Take to College

Son’s college won’t send any info about roommate selection/room/what to take list until August 15. I’d like to get started now instead of waiting until the last minute. Is there a forum on CC on what to take?

Look in the cafe…or do a search. Tons of suggested lists of what to take. Don’t expect the college to send this. They won’t. It is up to you.

Here is a link to a recent thread. Look there. There are links to previous ones.

Your son should look on his student portal for roommate information. The college either assigns roommates without any input from the students, or your son should have already received the questionnaire the college uses. The college has already said…August 15 is the date…so be patient.

But really this info is ALL contained on your son’s student portal…he should be looking into this.

We have a pretty good list up on the Class of 2014 parent’s thread too!

And less is better. Especially for sons…it just comes back unused. Save your money!

If the dorm room isn’t air conditioned you should have some type of fan.

S1’s sophomore room was a single with no a/c and I think we ended up buying three fans. S2 will be a freshman at the same school this year and I’m not sending half the stuff I sent with S1. It’s only 50 miles away and anything he really needs I can have to him in an hour.

The college selects the roommates. They will send your son an email with the info. I don’t remember getting any info on what to take. It’s really common sense. The only thing I forgot to pack was light bulbs. I don’t believe any of the dorms are air conditioned but my son has never even had a fan. Once he gets his dorm room - he can look on the school’s website and see the dimensions of the room. My son’s room freshman year was ginormous but it had no closet - only a wardrobe, so I bought storage containers for under the bed. Of course, he never used them.

There is a Walmart only 5 minute drive from campus if you forget anything.

“What NOT to buy your college-bound student this year”

See this article on Yahoo: https://shopping.yahoo.com/news/what-not-to-buy-your-college-bound-student-this-year-163415918.html

Just moved DS13 from his dorm to his on campus apartment. The one thing that I’m glad I brought with us and honestly most people didn’t was a 2 wheel dolly(hand cart). Not only did it save us time it also saved our backs. They sell cheap ones a home depot for about $30 and you can used them for every move in and move out.
