Foster youth with no legal guardian.

Hey guys. If I am an adult (community college wanting to transfer), who used to be in foster care and is now self-supporting, do I need to fill out the Legal Guardian Portion? There is no way to exclude it, do I put the governments information or do I put my biological parents information? I do not talk to them or have contact with them.

This is all I could find on the Common Application help pages:

Don’t want to list parent info

Many colleges collect this information for demographic purposes. Even if you are an adult or an emancipated minor, you will need to list this information. If you are a minor with a legal guardian (an individual or government entity), then please list that information as well. If you wish, you may list step-parents and/or other adults with whom you reside, or who otherwise care for you, in the Additional Information section.

I don’t have information about one of my parents.

You may select “unknown” to describe any parent that you do not wish to give information about. Selecting this option will make questions for this parent not required.

So try Unknown for each of them and add the information about Foster Care and being Independent in Additional Info section. If it won’t take unknown for both I would try the Govt info plus one unknown. Or if you must, one parent and unknown for the other.

Another option is to contact the common application people. Online go to the help section, there is a question tab.

Likely you know but you can file as independent for financial aid. Are you independent for financial aid? You are if you answer yes to this question

At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care, or were you a dependent or ward of the court?

Select Yes if you were in foster care at any time since you turned age 13, even if you are no longer in foster care as of today.
