<p>A great number of college kids have fake IDs. No question about that. It’s risky, but it happens anyway. Good students, athletes, even nerds. Yes, the technology is incredible.</p>
<p>I imagine the technology *is *incredible but considering how easy it is to buy illegal substances without it, why would anyone risk compounding their lawbreaking?</p>
<p>This is a timely article on substance abuse and parental influence. I have assumed I can influence this and talk to my kids regularly about it; it may or may not work, but I feel obligated to try. Don’t think you should just throw in the towel and let the kid slide with his fake ID…</p>

<p>My S had a fake ID. I saw it and it was incredibly believable. He used it to get into clubs. Said he never used it to buy alcohol “too risky, big trouble if you get caught–and I can always find someone to buy”. oy…</p>
<p>Got his ID taken away at bar in Hawaii. (“wow, it worked at the first two bars we went to!”) I was (prematurely) smug in telling him I was happy about that, and knowing his financial situation, that he couldn’t afford to get another. Ha! He informed me that whoever he got it from has a guarantee that if ID got confiscated, they would replace one for free! An enterprising operation…
sigh…this kid kept my hairdresser busy covering the grey hairs…</p>
<p>Your son is 18, he can choose what he wants to do and face the consequences. I don’t think it’s my place to take it away without my kid’s permission, but if she gets in trouble by using the fake ID then she’ll need to deal with it.</p>
<p>^ my house, my rules…he certainly can not choose what he wants to do while living under my roof. I’m his parent and taking something away for his own benefit is my obligation…I can’t stop being a parent simply because my kids turn 18.</p>

<p>geeps20 - I think you know how you want to deal with this. Are you looking for support? We all deal with this differently. You need to do what you think is right for your kid. I have always allowed my kids to drink before 21, and neither one is a big drinker, so I personally do not have a very strong view of prohibiting unders 21s from drinking as long as they do it safely.</p>

<p>oldfort…I think you are missing my major concern. A fake ID over Summer allows my kid to be the supplier of alcohol to all his friends…transporting is another crime.</p>
<p>I have no problem with safely drinking on the weekends…but I will not tolerate him using a fake ID to buy alcohol from a liquor store…while living under my roof. Would you?</p>

<p>So you have never jaywalked? Made a Hollywood stop at a red light? You’ve always paid the state its “use tax” after making a purchase from Amazon? Not to mention just about everything you’d ever want to do in a bedroom is still illegal somewhere in the United States.</p>

<p>Of course you are within your rights to make any rules you like while your son is living in your house. I’m not sure what you are seeking from others on this thread. You seem to be pretty well decided about the issue.</p>

<p>i would have my kid shred the illegal ID in front of H & me, after we chatted about the consequences of having it and other potential charges. At this point, both our kids are over 21 and have never encountered this situation.</p>

@ geeps… kids have been using fake id’s forever. I think you handled it right. Will he go out and get another one? Probably. Have the talk with him. I explained to my son that after 9/11, having a phony i.d. is not a good idea, they are cracking down on that and usually the punishment is much worse now than pre 9/11. Will my son listen to me? I hope so but college kids, hey, it is what it is.</p>

<p>as for the ID i found my daugher’s made a photocopy and when she turned 21 it was in her birthday card</p>

<p>I understand that a DUI is different from having a fake ID and <em>presumably</em> not drinking and driving, but the issues can be the same - arrest, permanent record, jail time, fines, additional charges depending on the circumstances.</p>
<p>What’s the connection?</p>
