I guess stranger things have happened, but I found a friendship (I know by looking at it) ring in my kitchen today. No, I am not jumping up and down because it does not have huge diamond. My guess is that it is worth $50-100 (generous estimate), but I am sure it has sentimental value to young person. I asked my sons if they knew anything about it, who it belonged to etc. My kids have no idea. We have called all of the kids who have visited our home over the last couple of days. Nobody is claiming it yet. I wonder if I could find the ring’s owner.

We are always finding things in our house that don’t belong to us. We’ve got lovely Gore-tex and LL Bean windstopper jackets, shoes, plates, fancy knives, etc. Not clear we’ve ever found jewelry, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Our house is a whilrwind of activity. My wife is infinitely social – we’re having an Iron Chef New Year’s Eve party with two families and it wouldn’t surprise me to find stuff from that in our drawers next month. [We’re not that organized and have a bunch of cleaning help]. We designed our house to be the best place for our kids to hang out with their friends. The boys, in particular, leave anything that is not sewn surgically to their persons. We keep it for a while (e.g. months) and ask people who seem likely to have left it. If not, I’m not sure where this stuff goes (the basement, Big Brother Big Sister)? I’d just keep it around in case someone asks.

Keep it safe. It is possible the rightful owner forgot it, broke up with the young man, got the ring and couldn’t show it to her parents, or simply took it off to show it around and got distracted.

If your kids have a facebook they could post a general found notice, leaving off the details until the rightful owner claims it.

I have some girl’s prescription eyeglasses which no one has claimed. What’s the statute of limitations on hanging on to these things? And wouldn’t you notice if you lost your glasses?

We have a pair of Nike sneakers and a missing pair of Asics sneakers. Clearly, one of my 10-year-old’s friends put on the wrong shoes when leaving our house. S2 does not wear the Asics often, so this could have happened weeks ago. I have called every friend and not found the owner. Gremlins?

I found 4 bras in my drawer this morning and they are NOT mine. I’ve had some houseguests for the holidays, but so far no one has claimed them. Yikes!

LOL, Toledo. I won’t even comment!

Some strange things are turning up in your homes. I thought it was just mine. We have had tons of sweatshirts, shirts, socks, and jackets over the years. My kids have found owners of these items most of the time. I have held onto a few things for 6 mos. before donating the item.

I thought posting a notice on facebook was a good idea, but not to my kids. So far nobody has claimed the ring. I am starting to think that a bagger at the grocery store could have lost it while bagging our groceries. Actually the last bagger was a male, but the cashier was female. Perhaps she lost it and that’s how it ended up in my kitchen. I have no other ideas. sigh…

We are always finding clothing and beach towels at our house…
Once found a silver locket in our washing machine that no one claimed.

Too funny, Toledo!!

My kids were notorius for leaving stuff allover the place, and then either not realizing it was missing or not knowing whose hose they left it at. Sigh… I must have repurchased zippered fleeces a gazilion times. Oh-- my favorite was younger son losing his dress shoes afer the prom. He didnt have another pair of shoes with him, I dont think. How do you lose your shoes???

Strip poker?

Sons went to a private boys’ school. At the end of the year, there were always many tables in the dining room filled with unclaimed clothing, sports equipment, books, etc. I can understand losing something like a swim towel, but how did boys in the northern part of the US manage to lose their down jackets and “never notice”?

Their loss was the local Coats for Kids campaign’s gain.

I found a ring once too. Never figured it out and it’s probably still in my jewelry box somewhere. It didn’t seem real expensive. I think I asked my D’s friends and no luck. I don’t feel overly responsible when people leave stuff here but I do hang onto it for a long, long time just in case.

D had a bowling birthday party once, and I carted kids from our neighborhood there. We got the rental shoes, left everyones shoes under the bench. When it was time to come home, one kid’s shoes were gone, nowhere to be found. I was so embarrassed to take that child home without his shoes. D only had two pairs at the time, and I knew how crabby I would have been.

Years and years ago, my great grandmother found a ring with a star of David and a diamond in the middle behind the sofa in her house. She was not Jewish, did not have Jewish friends and had zero idea where it came from. It got passed down and now my (Jewish) daughter wears it!

How come every one leaves junky old stiff skinny worn out beach towels at my house & my new fluffy bright pretty ones disappear?

A couple of D’s friends always seemed to take their socks off at our house. It always made me a bit squimish, but I could guess about the owners.

The oddest thing I’ve found in my house is a rolling pin. It’s not a typical flat rolling pin, but has indentations with odd shapes. One day it was just in the kitchen drawer. I still have no idea how it got there. I’m not even sure what the purpose of it is given the shapes.

One of the most amazing things at the end of the school year is to see all the stuff that gets left behind after lockers are cleaned out. Really nice fleeces, hoodies, etc. The building service workers and secretaries say the vast amount of it never gets claimed and winds up being donated to Goodwill.

Do any of you have ghosts? They’ve been known to move objects and even ‘donate’ things from time to time. I’m thinking about your rolling pin, rrah. Do you bake much?

I suspect that rolling pin is one for shortbreads and such. Maybe a ghost left that one…do you live in an older house?!
