foxes

What brings foxes to your backyard? I have seen foxes in the neighborhood but never in my yard. This year for some reason, they frequent my yard. I am guessing something in my yard is attractive to them. I like them ok but I prefer not to have them in my backyard.

Mice? Frogs? Birds? Predators usually look for food.

Foxes are so beautiful. You are lucky to have them in your backyard.

I dunno… Claudio Ranieri?

We had one in our yard this morning, got thru the fence. I think they must smell the dog and maybe they think they can come in and eat it.

I’d rather have foxes than mice in my backyard!

As long as the killings are silent. A couple of days ago an owl or another predator killed a rabbit in my backyard. The screams of the dying bunny woke me up and sent chills down my spine. Of course, I could not go back to sleep!

Yes, we have mice, birds, frogs and rabbits. But we have had them for the past 20 years and never had foxes. I am guessing I planted something that attracts some new animal that in turn attracts foxes?

TatinG, I am afraid of foxes. Embarrassing to admit.

Just keep remembering that they are more afraid of you than you are of them. If the fox is not afraid of you, then you know that it is suffering from some disease.

We have fox in our neighborhood but we rarely see them. Today I saw one running in the yard across the street so I was amused to see your post today.

My parents live in the burbs and get lots of deer in their backyard. The deer love to eat the flower blossoms off the plants my mom laboriously plants in her garden. Her tulips turned into a row of sad, decapitated stems.

The backyard also gets the occasional fox. My mom loves them because they’re carnivores…

Since the foxes moved into our neighborhood, the rabbits no longer chew our tasty bushes to the ground in winter.

Might just be that the local fox population is growing or had a big year and that sent foxes exploring new locales.

I love to watch them, have lived places where they were around but never encountered one up close. Usually we would see them run across the road as we were driving, or rarely we might look out the window and see one in the yard.

Rather foxes than bears, which I’ve also had in my yard! Then you really do have to be careful not to surprise them.

We had one that frequented our yard in MN. We lived on the edge of woods and had a big field on the other side of the house. I think it could catch prey there. Someone on Facebook has 5 fox kits in their yard right now that they are posting about – so cute!

Intparent goes off, humming “What Does The Fox Say?”

You need to get a new avatar. I keep mistaking your posts for mine.

Mine is just a cute guinea pig in a cage. What is yours?

Mine is just a cute squirrel in a cage. See-- too much similarity: hapless prey for foxes.

The town I live in near San Francisco has been overrun with coyotes over the last 2-3 years. Everyone’s freaking out about the coyotes eating their pets.

We get it all in our yard - coyotes, black bear, foxes, deer, turkeys. It’s like Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom North American version.

I think the mild winter experienced by many parts of the country is going to result in more sightings. It’s not unusual for us to have 2 or 3 deer show up in the yard. Lately however they are showing up in a herd of 7-8 which I’ve never seen before.

Foxes aren’t much of a threat to pets. Foxes like to eat rabbits, frogs, berries and grapes. I love foxes and think they are so beautiful. You really don’t have to worry about them. If you have foxes, you probably don’t have coyotes nearby if that makes you feel better. I happen to see a young coyote today in the middle of the city. He looked both ways and then crossed the road.

Foxes like to eat chickens. Not animals I like to see .

What did the fox say? 8-}
