Frankenstorm

morrismm, that’s awful. D lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan, and has already gotten an email that her office will be closed tomorrow.

Morrismm, that’s ridiculous. If they think her residence makes it so she doesn’t have an excuse not to be there, they should hire a car service for her.

Local shelters are asking people with spare animal crates to drop them off, in case people arrive with pets and no crates - the pets can’t stay without a crate, and I imagine it will be crazy with all those crated animals near each other. Still, better than staying or leaving them at home.

We had a bit of sprinkles a few hours ago, but otherwise nothing but a dark sky a bit earlier than usual due to the clouds. Last year we were in HI for Irene, kids had expected to miss the first day of school, but didn’t. Had just replaced roof, windows, and siding. October storm wasn’t so bad - our town was one of the few that didn’t lose power except isolated cases. Our town utility took a lot of flack in the past for cutting trees back, but that’s what saved us last year. I don’t think we’ll come out nearly as well this year.

Two things I’m thankful for: Wellesley visit was LAST weekend (they probably would have had to cancel if it had been this weekend). And visit to Haverford, Swarthmore and Bryn Mawr is NEXT weekend. This weekend was set aside to finalize the first round of the Common App. We’ll have 3 days of school this week (unless they cancel Wed. too), 3 days next week (2 days off for the election because they use the schools as polling places), 4 days the following week due to Veteran’s Day, and then 2 days plus an early dismissal Thanksgiving week. It will be almost a month (Nov 26) before we have a fill week of school again!

Shockingly my NYC office is closed, but we were all told to be online remotely. I know my boss will be sending BS emails to make sure we are.

Son just received email from his manager and his manager will be in tomorrow so I guess that he’s expected to be in tomorrow. He has about a 2/3 mile walk. It might be challenging getting back to his apartment. I’m wondering if his manager will change his mind when he sees the forecast in the morning.

Greyhound service from NY North is shut down now.

Service from NY South shuts down at midnight.

Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Cuomo closed the subways and buses this evening to prevent people from being out in the streets tomorrow when they will be at risk and as a way of shutting down the city and having everyone stay put in a (hopefully) safe place.

Any boss who expects someone to work tomorrow should have made provisions for that beginning tonight–food and beds for workers so that they don’t have to go out in the storm.

NYU is closed for younger D. Older D and husband were contacted early in the day that their offices were closed. D is expected to work from home if necessary. H will do so as needed.

I know of bankers/ finance people who are reporting tonight into their offices since the Stock Market is planning to open. However, they are being provided with beds and food.

Unless you are a doctor, EMS worker, or work for the police, fire department or provide some essential service, I would just say no.

Our pup can’t seem to settle down. She keeps wanting to go outside. When she’s not pacing from door to door, she’s glued to my side. My friend said that her pets (one dog and one cat) are acting the same way today. More than any weather reports on TV, the behavior of my pup is “telling” me that a storm is heading this way.

I just read that an 11 foot wave is expected in Manhattan—and bosses want people to WALK to work, um, NO. Stay safe everyone!

Some people’s priorities are so screwed up. Walk to work in the middle of a hurricane with debris flying around that could kill someone!?!? As another poster said they don’t want anyone on the streets and for good reason.

“Shockingly my NYC office is closed, but we were all told to be online remotely. I know my boss will be sending BS emails to make sure we are.”

And you are suppose to do this without power I suppose. ;)

Just called my company’s emergency hotline. Open for business as usual. FGS!

^^ I know!! D1 works in finance as a trader and trading continues around the world even if NYC is experiencing a hurricane. But safety is the most important consideration. D1 said she will tell her boss that and leave early if things seem to be getting too bad.

I do not know why there is no service or provisions. Her Co. is usually generous. Of course everything has changed since 2008, Dodd/Frank, etc. She has only worked there two years, yet has seen many changes.

^morrismm – good time for your D to come down with food poisoning and call in sick tomorrow – totally unrelated to the pending storm of course :). I would not want my lightweight D out in gale force winds in Manhattan. I’m sure she’s the low man on the totem pole so to speak, but safety comes first.

We told our employees (all of whom use mass transit) to stay home tomorrow. We’ll be working from home (if power holds).

Is anyone else viewing this as a kind of laundry deadline? Suddenly (with the fear of losing power) I’m washing bedding, towels, boxers, t-shirts – anything that looks less than fresh.

Yes, doing laundry.

We did our laundry earlier today…and took hot showers too. And vacuumed the floors.

We brought firewood inside for the fireplace. Temps are supposed to drop tomorrow & if we lose power (and I assume we will), the furnace blower will not work. It’s easier to start a fire with dry wood than wet wood.

I did last load of laundry earlier today and will be running the dishwasher later. I also washed my hair even though it really didn’t need it yet.

Back in 2007, I interviewed at a large Fortune 500 company. The position required me to drive to the office 45 minutes away at 3 a.m. for occasional web and teleconferences with their Asian and Australian offices. This was expected regardless, of the weather. They would not provide a blackberry nor a laptop for me to do this at home. I already had this equipment with my current position at a smaller company that allowed me to work from home when needed. I did not understand their position on making the employee go in but that was their culture. In the end, I decided it was not worth the extra 10K they were offering for me to do this. Their other outstanding benefits could not make up for my safety.

I wish more companies would embrace the technology. I do not think it is possible in all positions but if it is, they should use it for the safety of their employees.

morrism …The financial center is near the Battery, which was evacuated due to high storm surge expectations.

We have a steady, light rain now. I guess this is it! Stay safe everyone.

Geez, how big is this Sandy thing??? They’ve issued a Lakeshore warning for Chicago! 16-20 Ft. waves and 50 mph north winds. I thought my D’s first winter living in Chicago would be exciting weatherwise, but did not have this in mind…
