Frankenstorm

DC metro is shut down…

Federal government is closed so I will be enjoying the day off.

Does anyone know how the weather is right now in Lower Manhattan? Concerned for someone who will evacuate in the morning.

Just talked to my D who is lives in Lower Manhattan. She said no rain or much wind at all.

I’m sending good thoughts to all of my CC friends in Sandy’s path. Please keep updating if you can. I and many others will be following along.

Keeping fingers crossed for everyone in the hurricane’s path and hoping that no lives will be lost. Please stay safe!

DD who lives in CA is stranded in NYC until at least Wednesday.

Many colleges have cancelled classes in the NE. Yale cancelled for tomorrow, gave all on-campus students a bag of provisions and told them not to leave their residential buildings at all tomorrow.

No rain yet here in Philly, though the wind is starting to pick up some. School and work were cancelled today. I’m expecting a repeat for tomorrow. I’m just hoping for convenient breaks in the weather when it’s time to take the dog out :)

D is in Providence and Brown Med School cancelled classes for tomorrow.

Thanks for the report on lower Manhattan, Anxiousmom.

Enjoying great coffee and electricity! google how to improve phone battery life ie turn off siri, brightness and other functions-
update from south jersey-
Winds sustained 40 now-big gusts starting-

Atlantic City Press:
Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson stressed the dangers of the approaching storm during a news conference Saturday and hoped people would not compare the situation to Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011.
“This is the one we’ve been fearing throughout the history of our area,” he said. “This is our worst-case scenario.”

New York hotels are asking guest to leave. No staff.

But: no planes are leaving; no trains are running. Hmmmmmmm.

How can they leave?

Here in southern CT, lots of wind but no rain.

Anyone need a large supply of halloween candy? Not the healthiest of rations, but you won’t starve :)

Hotels are difficult to manage during a storm. think all interior corridors…super dark and no elevator so guests using back stairs and emergency lighting. I’ve done it and it can be ugly. OTOH I have no idea where they expect them to go.
This storm is extremely slow moving…good since there was plenty of warning but bad since it will linger over land longer.
DS finally got an email at 11pm Sunday cancelled his classes in Boston today. Relief for this worried Mom.

The latest NOAA track show that the top half of NJ and NYC are NOT in the hurricane path. Of course my south Jersey beach house is! This storm may completely ruin our new home (which we just moved into last May). There is nothing that we can do but watch, wait, and pray. We do have flood insurance but the deductible is huge (as you all know that it will be when you try to cash in a claim after a natural disaster).

Seiclan, that track is just where the center (eye) of the storm may go. The hurricane is huge and Northern NJ and NYC are going to be hit very very hard.

Very sorry about your home but at least you do have insurance.

I didn’t realize until this morning just BIG this thing is. Even here in mid Michigan we’re getting strong winds and possibility of snow tonight. Just stay safe all.

Seiclan - found a site with a streaming webcam in Surf City. (not sure if this is considered a blog or not for posting…given the storm, those of us with shore houses are hoping to keep up with situation)

[LBItoday.com | A photo blog of life on Long Beach Island focusing on nature, weather and history.](http://www.lbitoday.com/)

On Facebook, the US Weather Service Mount Holly and Severe NJ weather also have some timely reporting and people are posting pictures. Stay safe. Latest track from NWS has storm making landfall farther south - Cape May (sorry garland), which may be a bit better for us. (I’ll take any possible reduction in storm surge).

School canceled here for Tuesday too.

Consolation…I was thinking of you this morning when I heard Amtrak was suspending all service north of NYC. I hope your son got to that appointment but even MORE I hope his visa issue is resolved.

I think I win the prize…my husband went to work this morning…and NO he is not a doctor, emergency worker, or utility crew member. Ridiculous!

romanigypsyeyes–there is a second storm system moving from the northwest that is expected to collide with the hurricane. That is probably what you are experiencing.
