Frankenstorm

The NYT is sharing readers’ photos here. [Readers? Photographs of Hurricane Sandy - Interactive Feature - NYTimes.com](<a href=“Readers’ Photographs of Hurricane Sandy - Interactive Feature - NYTimes.com”>Readers’ Photographs of Hurricane Sandy - Interactive Feature - NYTimes.com) It’s kind of addicting! Be safe all.

Update from southeast (inland) VA: The winds are beginning to pick up (the storm has now made it’s so-called “left turn”). My home peninsula (the Northern Neck) already has about 1100 people without power. Norfolk experienced some bad storm surge yesterday afternoon and evening (roads were flooded), but the tide is expected to actually drop here as it picks up in NY/NJ. Interesting enough, western VA (north to south) is slated to experience blizzard conditions.

In other words, this storm is madness. And it hasn’t even gotten here it.

D’s boyfriend is at Cornell. Any impact expected in that part of NY?

D2 is at Cornell:

She is quite upset the school is open.

Steve, it looks like the storms have already merged because it looks like the same storm. I’m definitely no expert though :D

LOL, thanks. Yes, it probably seems terribly unfair. :D

I’m in a Massachusetts coastal area and it is really just windy here. Very little rain and even the wind, in my opinion is not that unusual. I haven’t been down to the beach but what they are showing on TV looks like, well, a tide on a stormy day. They are fearful of high tide at noon.
I guess it will get worse but I’m not impressed at this point.

EPTR-
As I understand it the storm isn’t really supposed to hit here in MA until lunchtime. I agree about your assessment so far-in the immortal words of Pooh “It’s a very blustery day, outside” but nothing unusual for NE.

Surprisingly, my dentist just cancelled my cleaning because they’ve lost power. I’m so upset. ;)

It’ll probably be rainy and quite windy in Ithaca and power outages could definitely occur. The storm not really getting to upstate until later this afternoon/evening. I’m in Albany and most of the public school districts in the area are open but sending kids home early and none of the colleges are closed today except a few in the high flash flood areas which got hit hard from Irene.

It hasn’t started raining where I am yet and it’s only started getting windy-ish.

I’m not far from Cornell. We won’t get anything like the coast. It’s perfectly safe for the students to be going to class. No schools are closed anywhere near Cornell. The worst isn’t going to hit here until tonight and even then it won’t be like others.

Some idiot across the street is moving. They have a big moving truck on the street.

Here in Wilton, CT - about 50 miles from NYC, we were told work’s getting out at noon and we’re off tomorrow.

EPTR–according to the NWS it is still almost 400 miles off-shore so you are just starting to get the winds. The intense part of the storm is expected later this evening.

romanigypsyeyes–yes, the storm masses are close together but the coastal areas are just starting to feel the storm, MI most certainly isn’t getting winds from Sandy yet.

Manhattan School of Music has apparently issued emergency evacuation plans to all students but I believe it is open until further notice

The MBTA is now saying that it will be shutting down at 2.

So I have a stupid questions. I bought a lighter at Shaw’s yesterday. I don’t have matches and I never use lighters, but I thought it would be a good idea to have something in case the power fails so I can actually light my gas stove and my candles. I can’t make it work, and I think the issue is that I can’t figure out what the safety is. It’s a Scripto Mighty Match and there are instructions on their website, but the one I have doesn’t match the picture – it has little silver wheels. So the picture says “Push Latch In” and I can’t figure out what to push in. Does anyone have more experience with lighters that can give me an answer?

What I have: <a href=“Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles & More | eBay”>Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles & More | eBay;

It is definitely releasing gas because I can hear it.

I feel like an idiot and I’m sure I’m just missing something obvious.

Nrdsb4 - if your daughter wants to monitor Cornell’s situation:

eireann, I think if you are hearing gas, the issue is getting a spark, which means getting that wheel to turn. You have to do two things simultaneously. I don’t have experience with that type of lighter, but can you figure out how to get a spark (by pushing down the thing on top or spinning the wheel), then pair it with whatever you do to get gas?

Daughter/son in law are stuck in Washington hotel. Everything is closed, including the transportation. She said it is just a heavy rain- not terrible yet.

Manually turning the wheel? I so should have bought matches. I thought these were supposed to be easier.

eireann, it’s hard to tell from the photos whether there is a safety device on this lighter to make it child-proof. If not, then you just use your thumb to turn the wheel and then your thumb will end up pushing the gas button, all in one motion. Have you tried that?
