On my lighter you must push a lever or a wheel up towards the tip while you push the starter button with your thumb-but it is a “firestarter,” not a regular lighter.

Thanks for the LBI cam link - that is just 2 blocks from my house and it looks flooded already :(

Thanks, oldfort, I will send her the link.

THanks, Nrdsb4. I think it is the wheel, but it’s still not doing anything anything – it just needs to turn? I’ll probably end up going upstairs to ask my landlords for matches if we do lose power. We are in the “likely power loss” area.

S2’s office is closed for today in DC. There really was no choice since all public transportation is shut down. He hasn’t lost power at home yet, but I’m assuming he will.

We did more laundry this weekend than we normally do in a 2-day period. I turned down the temp in the fridge and freezer…it’s so cold in the fridge that ice crystals are forming in the milk. So far in central CT we’ve had light rain and it’s windier than yesterday, but not as bad as they’re saying it will get. The governor is shutting down our highways at 1pm if that indicates what they’re expecting.

eireann, youtube “lighting a lighter.”

Thanks for the tip about turning down the temp in the fridge & freezer. I hadn’t thought of that. My usual system is to send Happydad out to swipe dry ice, regular ice, and more freezer packs from his lab. But in the predicted conditions that short drive would probably not be a smart thing to do.

Had to come into the office to deal with a server issue. About 1/3rd of employees are in (I was surprised). The weather is not bad here. Son went into the office too in Boston. We’ll see if he is let out early.

I brough provisions in case I have to spend the night here.

Well…that school canceled for tomorrow was an error on the radio website! I suspect it will be…or at least a delayed opening.

So far no significant wind or rain here. But they say it will deteriorate rapidly.

DD reported East River is breaking over the river sidewalk in Manhattan, small whitecaps on NY Bay. Water close to Hudson River riverwalk. Winds picking up.

Did they forcast the time and location of the landfall yet? I turned on the news but they just go on and on that I have a hard time paying attetion. So far, it is not so bad where I am, southeastern PA. Somewhat windier than usual but nothing to be alarmed. Tall trees in my yard isn’t moving much having lost most leaves.

My sister in northwest NJ just lost power.

Ahhhh. Jim Cantore had to replace Stephanie Abrams on Battery Park City, NY. She was reporting this morning, presumably to give Jim some time to rest up after he spent a very long day there yesterday. Then they were reporting together, which I have never seen, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened before. But then she ad libbed that “at least the storm was moving quickly.” Even I knew that was wrong! You should have seen the look on Jim’s face! He recovered to say, “Not quick enough for some people!” and they went to commercial. She was soon gone. I’ve never been a fan of hers, and no one can come close to Jim’s expertise, but really, the storm is moving quickly??? She should listen to her own colleagues who have been preaching “the storm is moving very slowly” rant for the last three days.

Wind and rain really picking up now in coastal RI. Our main town beach is already largely washed away and water covering the parking lot. Tree limbs starting to come down. Power flickering.

Hoping this wont be my last post for a while. The storm isn’t even here yet, but my MIL is all ready without power in the next town over. The bay has breached the wharf in town. My puppy is acting weird as if she senses something. My friends are telling me their pets are acting weird too.

Manhattan School of Music has now shut down for the next 3 days

for the LBI folks. Just saw FB pic from Beach Haven w street in front of Murphy’s Market & the Marlin 3-4’ deep. Assume this was taken probably around 8am high tide.

nysmile, our dog is acting weird also. She keeps wanting to go outside to bark at the storm, much like she does when she notices something invading her space, like a squirrel or geese flying overhead. I wish her the best of luck in keeping the storm at bay!

DS made it back to Boston; Harvard and MIT are both closed. Our friend who thought he’d be on the last plane out of Dulles last night ended up having that flight cancelled and driving through the night to O’Hare. Public schools are closed here in central PA though the U is open. Interesting vibe at Wegman’s this morning, nervous but excited energy and a spirit of camaraderie. I am keeping everything plugged into the chargers.

My little dogs were very restless last night. Got me up several times wanting to go out. They are both lazing around now but big dog is now wanting to go out and when I let her she just paces in the yard.

I heard on TWC that Atlantic City is already underwater!
