Is there a way for me to get to know each frat before rush? Should I email the recruitment chairs and ask if they have any summer events or something like that? I just feel that pre-rush/rush is not enough time to get fully acquainted with all the fraternities.

Some houses have parties over the summer, but definitely not all. And to be honest, I doubt the guys are going to be looking to have any kind of real conversations over summer.

I will say, though, that rush for guys is a lot different from girls in that the guys sometimes like you more when you go out of your way to introduce yourself and make sure the guys in the house know and like you. This stands more true for actual rush though.

If there are houses you are particularly interested in, say, if you’re a legacy or something, I don’t think it could hurt to introduce yourself. If not, I wouldn’t worry about it. Pre-rush starts with the most epic parties and a bbq, so there should be plenty of times to at least get somewhat of an idea about each house.

Word is is that pre-rush aka “Welcome Back Week” has been cancelled by the administration.

To Ruskie: Most if not all houses have Rush facebook groups. There is an admin of the group who is usually rush chair. You can facebook message that person.

No wayyyy… worst. news. ever.

doubt its cancelled

Even if it was canceled, they’d just have some other event on the row that amounts to basically the same thing.

IFC will not allow non-Greeks on the row for pre-rush this fall, effectively cancelling it.

how will they know if we are non-Greeks? Can’t students just say they are Greek?

They’ll probably ask which frat/sorority you belong to, and maybe some details. I really doubt they’ll enforce it too well.

Its debatable whether theyll be able to effectively enforce it. IFC is apparently pretty serious about it though.

IFC is basically a puppet of the administration. I’ve heard (admittedly second-hand) that the administration told IFC that if they didn’t cancel it themselves, they would do it for them. And with the steps the administration has taken to cut down on the Greek System, I’m inclined to believe that is accurate.

And even if they don’t really enforce it, attendance will be down because the new freshman are inclined to just follow directions not wanting to make a splash their first week of school. The administration has slowly but surely chipped away at the Greek System and this is just another step. They just do it gradually over time rather than one big step so as not to galvanize opposition. As students graduate, they basically fade and this frees up the administration to add more restrictions because the new students do not know how it “used to be”.

As recently as my freshman year, pre-rush used to have double or even three-times more attendance as this past semester. LAPD didn’t patrol back and forth (as they do now), and there were much fewer DPS as well. Thursday nights used to be a good time. Now DPS shuts everything down past like 1AM. Rush used to be wet as well (but this was before my time). I feel a little bad for each incoming class knowing that the administration will continue to erode their social life.

All this doom and gloom just means that you’re going to have to find places off the Row to party.

…which proves my point, the Row is not what it used to be.

^^ I’ll be changing that when I get there =P
