I used to receive fraudulent IRS phone calls. It’s been quiet since they were busted. It looks like it is starting up again. This time from “Treasury Department”. The treasury department is suing me according to the robo call. Is there a place I can report the call number?
I don’t know any number, but I’ve received them also.
The IRS has a page about phishing: https://www.irs.gov/privacy-disclosure/report-phishing
You also could try reporting this to your state’s equivalent of Wisconsin’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
For some discussion of fraudulent calls in 2017 and the agency’s response, see this: https://www.revenue.wi.gov/Pages/News/2017/DATCP_DORPhoneScams42817.pdf
I have reported calls to donotcall.gov although I’m not sure it does anything.
If it makes you feel better to have company, I have been contacted by the “treasury department” regarding Grand Theft auto. The FBI is monitoring and investigating my address. I’m also involved in illegal pornography. I guess the “lawsuit” regarding tax payment is least of my problems! ![]()
I think I would find it funny if I didn’t know people fall for these scams. Pretty sure official government agencies don’t use robocalls to contact miscreants, or request payment through CVS and Walgreens…
No, they don’t use robo calls but they can place millions of robo calls easily. If just one out of a million falls for it, they come out ahead. I must have a leak somewhere. My credit cards are also being used fraudulently. My credit card company had to issue a third card this year so far because of suspicious activities.
@rosered55 Thanks for the links. I reported the incident. I hope they can nail these guys before anyone falls for it.
I have had 7-8 annoying calls in the last few weeks, both robocalls and live calls, telling me that my Microsoft Windows has been corrupted and that it will be shut down in 48 hours. I need to call for a new IP address, blah, blah, blah… Particularly interesting since I don’t own a Windows based computer
I got the scam IRS, fraudulent activity, warrant for arrest one along with the public electricity robo call
I feel sorry for all the seniors who get these calls and think they might have by accident done something wrong with their taxes or didn’t pay the electric bill
You should watch all the funny videos on YouTube with all the people who play along with the scam, at least until the end of the video. Three types, IRS, Land grants and Microsoft support.
The IRS has called me a bunch of times. At this point theynare ready to put me in jail. I say…come and get me. :-h
Maybe they have called you, but I am the one with FOUR SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS AGAINST ME!!!
Hey, it was ME! They left ME a message!
As transcribed by my iPhone!
“And once again expired after that you will be taking under custody by the local police as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment we would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you the number to reach us is 716-254-2811 I repeat 716-254-2811 thank you…”
Are you sure they said “police” ? Mine said “constable”.
Mine didn’t say “police” or “constable.” It said “local cops.”
But they seem pretty consistent about there being four serious allegations.
Mine didn’t say anything about four allegations. It said Treasury Dept will be suing me. My call was from 516-300-1823 BTW about playing along, I read somewhere if you talk too much, they may get your voice analyzed for to get your voice ID. I don’t know if these guys are that sophisticated.
And I’m getting another Costco card, as I got a fraud alert. Someone tried to cash $1.00 from a gas station. Same with my other credit card, now, I don’t have any recurring charges on credit cards
Last time I go a scam call, I decided to pick up. I announced that I was the morgue, and made up a jingle (“you stab 'em! we slab 'em!”). Never got called again! :))
I keep getting calls on our auto warranty expiring—our cars are 20 years old!
@Publisher - yup that was done by the auto transcribe function of my phone. In the past, it was “constable.” Then it was “local cops.” Then the little rats were probably tipped off that “cops” is too informal for a governmental entity to use. Lol. Now it is “police.”
Yes, I got the IRS message. I have four serious allegations against me, too. There is a warrant for my arrest. Their grammar was terrible.
When I received the Microsoft scam call, it was a live person calling. I don’t have Microsoft on my personal laptop. So I asked the guy, “If you know so much, what kind of computer do I have?” He hung up on me.
My son-in-law didn’t get a phone call, but got a letter saying that they had discovered what he was doing and he had to pay them to be quiet - - in BitCoin! I think it was $7,000.
I have a neighbor who is an investigator for the IRS. He’s gotten the IRS scam calls AT WORK! There are probably about 400 warrants out for his arrest, another 400 lawsuits filed by the treasury department, every local PD in the country is looking for him… oh, and his social security number has been cancelled about a dozen times, or so he has been told. He says 20 years ago these would have been great prank calls from coworkers, but not something they would ever consider doing now.
