Freaking out

I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA, I’m #1 in my class, I’ve taken all the Honors/AP/IB classes offered at my school, I have a 34 composite ACT score, and I have some decent extracurriculars, awards, and service hours. I was recently wait-listed at Colorado School of Mines, which, according to the College Board school search service, admits 46 percent of its applicants. Now I’m really worried that I don’t stand a chance of getting into Yale. I also applied to Harvard, Stanford, Vanderbilt, and Notre Dame. Does anyone have some reassurance?

Getting waitlisted in one college, despite its acceptance rate (you don’t know anything about their admissions process anyway), is not indicative of an acceptance in another one. I read somewhere that a college in Boston doesn’t accept its strongest applicants that they predict will end up going to far more selective schools to shake off its reputation as a safety school. You never know!

Ever heard of tufts syndrome? ;)

Don’t worry! I agree with the above posters. But I can totally relate, because a similar thing happened to me. :/

I was wait listed today as well and have fantastic stats just like yours. I wouldn’t worry about it. It does **** me off though; they hassled me for over two months trying to get me to apply, waived my application fee, essay, everything. All I had to do was put in 3 or 4 stats and send in SAT scores and a transcript. Then they go and waitlist me? I’m 100% sure it’s Tuft’s syndrome; the school probably wants to build up its reputation so it tried to get people like us to apply, only to reject us and lower its acceptance rate. Acceptance rate, as silly as it sounds, factors in to many college rankings, such as US News’s rankings.

In short, don’t worry about it. As far as I’m concerned, that school is officially a bunch of jerks toying with applicants. I might have actually gone there if they hadn’t pulled this with me.

And if anyone thinks I’m just way too sure of myself, trust me. I have ECs, test scores, GPA, and rank. That’s all they asked from me, no essay or anything else from which to judge me. There’s no way I shouldn’t have been accepted.

I’m sorry, I know how you feel. 2 of my safeties did that, and I didn’t even get into Honors or get money. I got phone calls, brochures, endless emails about the Honors Programs. Personally though, don’t go around saying that stuff in public, it’ll make you seem arrogant. I know how you feel, trust me, 100% I can relate, but like, I ranted to my friend about it, and now she, and half the school, think I’m a brat. -.-

Pianoman,
I am from Colorado, so I am pretty familiar with Mines. By applying there, you are probably interested in Engineering, but that is just about EVERYTHING that Mines looks at. If the non-engineering parts of your application are strong, you probably have a better chance at the schools that aren’t strictly engineering schools, despite the stats. I’ve actually known people that have been rejected at Mines, but accepted at Duke.

That’s the beauty of being online xD! I can say whatever’s on my mind. And honestly, I don’t feel entitled in any way, shape, or form. I just think it’s ridiculous that schools do that, and I should be able to speak my mind. I don’t care that much, I just could never personally relate to everyone who went through Tuft’s syndrome. Now that I have experienced it firsthand, yeah, I’m mad. It’s not the fact that I got waitlisted, it’s the principle. It’s sad that so many schools only care about the numbers and the money now.
