Read through my common app essay today, just for no reason…the essays had already been sent out to all schools. This essay has been read by five, six different people. The essay is all about the importance of words.

I came across a grammar error!! I said “I’ve got”!!! This may not seem like a big deal but I am freaking out! Is this big, will this stand out like a sore thumb in my essay? At some of my schools it is the only one that they received.

I know it is a tiny point…I just want to know its impact.

as in “I’ve got shelves filled with years and years’ worth of English classes long gone.”

It wasn’t entirely formal, but the whole thing was about the importance of words and then I went and used “I’ve got”. ironic. and my brilliant, brilliant English teacher who read over it didn’t catch it. WHY

Babybird: You said it yourself in a previous post: “I’m done, pretty much. It’s almost worse than not being done, because all I have is time to think about this EA thing.”

Your essay is fine; you will get into a wonderful college; it’s time to stop torturing yourself and find other things to think about. :)

awww thanks, unfortunately if I do not torture myself about this I will be torturing myself about getting deferred EA…over the Christmas break too…eeeeeek

I feel better though. I probably come off as really neurotic with this. I guess you wouldn’t be surprised then to find out I burned my deferral letter. haha

You should not fret about using “I’ve got”. With the few minutes dedicated to read each file, adcoms won’t scrutinize the essays to discover the smallest of errors or typos. We all find errors in our uploaded essays. For what it is worth -no pun intended- I am not sure why you used only one apostophe after years “I’ve got shelves filled with years and years’ worth of English classes long gone.”

haha, thanks a lot xiggi! I was just paraphrasing, the actual sentence is thus: “I’ve got shelves full of folders stuffed with writings I’ve saved from years and years of English classes.” so no apostrophe needed, really.

and yes, ilcapo did indeed read this essay. mleh, now he is the god of this forum. :)
