Fredonia V. U Buffalo

Hi there everybody, im a graduationg high school student who has got accepted into both SUNY Fredonia and U Buffalo. what im wondering is what can anyone tell me about either, and which one should i choose. i know its a bit blunt, but heres some backround, i’m a swimming who is wanted by Fredonia but not U Buffalo, im looking into a future that includes sciences, and maybe medicine. any feedback will be helpful and needed.

Congratulations on the choice. Buffalo is a major university, IMO a hidden gem. Great facilities, great departments, and top rate professors. It has excellent but tough sciences. Many, many international students take advantage of this outstanding school.

I don’t know as much about Fredonia–my son went to Buffalo, but the one person who I know went there got solid training in music technology there and enjoyed it. You need to look into the science offerings there. If the classes are smaller, if they help those who are pre med on a more personal basis than UB does, it might be worthwhile going there. UB is a big school and you do not get the personal attention in premed type courses. It’s either sink or swim, and though you are a swimmer, we aren’t talking about that kind of pool.

So it comes down to a smaller, easier to manage school or a top rate national university.

Buffalo is well known for its sciences. My son is a current engineering major. I think it is a great school for you and will likely offer you a lot of experiences if you seek them out.

My good friend’s daughter is currently at Fredonia. Small. Music teacher major. Sounds like it is known for it’s education and music programs.

UB has a med school. May help to get undergrad there?? Unsure… but at least it has many science type undergrad majors for you.

Good luck picking.

For the sciences, I would definitely choose Buffalo. For music or education, I’d choose Fredonia.

As long as you’re a strong, capable, organized student who won’t get thrown by being in some big classes, your interest in science points to SUNY at Buffalo. I know a handful of profs at UB who say that if an undergraduate is assertive, interested, comes to see them during office hours, they are interested in those students. If you sit out in class, only, and just hand in work, then they won’t know you.

Fredonia’s strengths include music, music theater and education. The profs would know you more readily without your working at it to get to know them.

There are some new plans coming true for a medical research corridor in downtown Buffalo to include the Roswell Cancer Institute and other institutions. This will give even more cache and prestige to someone who studies science or medicine at UBuffalo. The City of Buffalo is vibrant, with professional sports and cultural institutions (art museums, symphony orchestra…) with some difficulties because it’s the nation’s third poorest city. Rich or poor, the people I find here are generous, friendly, straightforward and helpful; that’s the spirit of the community.

I guess it’s appealing that Fredonia wanted you as a swimmer, but you’ll have to weigh what that means to you. Fredonia’s in a very small college town with one long main street. You’d never have a moment’s worry about safety there. It’s in a region with plenty of hunting, fishing, farming and some wineries; rough and rural.

The weather in Buffalo is actually better than Fredonia! Fredonia happens to sit right in the middle of the target for lake effect snow from Lake Erie. The area around Jamestown NY, Fredonia and Erie get more snow than Buffalo. However, there is plenty left for Buffalo, too. :)
