[The Berkeley Compass Project](http://www.berkeleycompassproject.org) is an award-winning organization whose mission is to improve education, foster community, and increase retention of students in the sciences at UC Berkeley. In 2012, Compass won the American Physical Society’s [Award for Improving Undergraduate Physics Education](Award for Improving Undergraduate Physics Education Awardees).

We offer a lot of cool programs to support science students, including a FREE two-week [summer program](Loading...) where you can get know other incoming science students. This year’s program will have 20 students, and the teachers will be 6 PhD students who are doing research in the fields of Physics, Astronomy, Biophysics, Chemistry, and Education.

The program is totally free to you; Compass will pay for your room and board during the program, and you get to move in to your dorm room early! This year’s summer program will be from August 10-25, 2013. We’re taking applications now, and you can apply here:

Each year, the summer program has a theme. We like to keep the theme secret until your very first day of the program, but I can tell you what we’ve done in previous years. Way back in 2007, the theme of our very first summer program was, “What can earthquakes tell us about the interior of the earth?” Last year’s theme was, “Do falling slinkies defy gravity?”

We really hope you join our community by applying to the summer program. In past years, we’ve had about twice as many applicants as we could place, so there’s a good chance you’ll be accepted into our program.

We’re looking forward to reading your application. Again, you can apply here:
