Free Britney - I'm confused

I keep seeing reports about the issues for Britney Spears. I am not a lawyer and also not wealthy, know next to nothing about trusts, conservatorships. She has not had control of her finances since 2008. I don’t know enough to have an opinion about her current ability to handle her own finances but this has been going on for years. I guess I don’t understand why a neutral party was not appointed years ago. Family members, manager, etc. surely have a financial interest in keeping her under their watch.

I know I’m missing something here and hoping those more familiar with these kinds of situations will shed more light on what may be going on here.

Is the person she is requesting to take over from her father her boyfriend? I agree that if it is still necessary for her to have conservator, it should be someone with no vested financial interest whatsoever.

No. She is requesting it remain in the hands of.her current temporary conservator (who is unrelated and apparently does this professionally) and to permanently remove her father, who temporarily stepped down a couple of years ago

She wants her dad out as sole conservator. According to court documents - "Without in any way waiving her right to seek termination of this conservatorship in the future, Britney would like Ms. Montgomery’s appointment as conservator (she was state appointed) to be made permanent. She strongly prefers to have a qualified corporate fiduciary appointed to serve (as conservator of her estate) ".

It will be interesting to see when/if she ever seeks to have this conservatorship terminated.

I certainly don’t know Britney personally., but she seems fine with the conservatorship. Her issue seems to be who is running it. She’s certainly made no public comment about wanting to end it nor has she filed to do so. I don’t think she’s running the #FreeBritney movement behind the scenes, but I could be wrong.

The court hearing was closed yesterday but some sources are saying her dad was not removed as conservator and the next hearing is in February. The ACLU tweeted yesterday that “If Britney Spears wants to regain her civil liberties and get out of her conservatorship, we are here to help her.”

The dad was not removed. I have never understood this situation. I understand that a conservator was necessary years ago, but now, unless I’m missing something, she should regain control of her life

I don’t understand how a 38 year old woman has to have her father as her conservator, if she has expressly told the court she does not want him in that role. Many adults would not want a parent to have that level of control over their finances and personal lives. If she wanted him in that role, that would be a different story.

I have not seen anything online about what happened at the hearing yesterday. I did go down a rabbit hole a couple of months ago reading about the Free Britney movement.

I read, “There has been a social media push – and even the ACLU joined in – questioning the conservatorship and advocating that it end, but multiple sources connected with the conservatorship say the doctors who have been caring for Britney over the last dozen years have said the conservatorship is necessary for her safety and possibly even her survival.” So sad.

I can appreciate that sentiment. However the woman is worth $59 million. The ACLU should help people who do not have those kinds of resources behind them.

The Free Britney movement became big because of fans on Tik Tok and Twitter. I don’t know about the legality of any of it, but it became a joke (almost. we understand it could be serious) amongst teens because her videos made it seem as though she was being held captive.

On another note, her father remains her financial conservator because she has been deemed mentally unfit to make her own decisions ever since she went to rehab.

Pretty sure an organization of that size can deal with more than one case at a time.
