just kidding. just another chance thread after all…

I am really curious to hear from people on CC. I’m planning to apply to some colleges that my high school hasn’t sent anyone to for ages.

GPA: GPA 3.9, school doesn’t rank but I think i’m 2 or 3

Courses (Starting with Sophomore year):
English 10, Algebra/Geometry 2, Western Civ, Bio, French 3, Orchestra (Violin)

English 11, PreCalc, American History, Chem, English 11, French 4, Orchestra

SAT2’s: Taking in October also. Practice tests put me 680 - 750 lit, 700+ math2. but who knows.

ECs: Skiing. HUGE part of who I am, but I was injured during my junior season so I’m not expecting help from a coach (I would love to ski, but I’m also looking at schools that don’t have ski teams) Year round training/racing/travel related to skiing. Living the dream.
Also ran Cross country fresh/soph
Violin/music. Also important to me, may submit a CD
Studio art. I’m definitely going to do an art supplement.
Unpaid intern for a local news blog. I’m interested in journalism, it’s really fun and great experience
Working a part time-job each summer.
Class counsel member all 4 years.
Volunteer with local environmental groups, including a service trip to help flood victims in my area.
Student-mentor for the little guys, twice a week for 10 weeks in the fall/spring
Short fiction I’ve written has been published in a publication for young authors
planning to attach a list of books I’ve read. I’ve heard that can be helpful, and mine is very long…
I am taking airplane flying lessons this summer, don’t know if that can count for anything?
^Basically I’m involved and I do a lot, but I haven’t won any awards (other than athletic) and my extras don’t tend to have anything math/sciencey involved. Dealbreaker?

Also, my school doesn’t offer AP’s, so I self-studied and got a 3 on us history and 3 on lit.

My recommendations are from two teachers that I’ve connected with very well. I have a great relationship with my counselor too (he’s my advisor!) and I may ask the editor of the news blog to write one as well.
Still working on the essays, but hopefully they’ll be solid. I’m having fun writing them.

THANKS so much, you da best. If there’s anything else I can do let me know!!

I’d say you have a decent shot at Williams. The lack of AP classes might hurt you a bit though.

Thanks, I appreciate the response. I agree about APs, I’m hoping to take some more self-studies this year, probably psych and human geo and possibly calc AB.
anyone else?

Reaches will be tough, but your GPA and ACT and ECs are very good. The lack of APs probably will hurt, but if your school doesn’t have them then not as much. I’d go ED to Williams, and maybe an ED round II if you get deferred, but I say you have a good chance of getting in.

If your school doesn’t offer APs, the adcoms will know that and not count it against you. Self-studying shows motivation. I think you have a nice list going- most will appreciate your activities. But, are there any school things beyond XC and class counsel (and mentoring?) Clubs? Orchestra? Your independence rings and you want to show balance.
Watch out for the book list, unless specifically asked about influential works or you can gracefully insert this into your personal statement.
