Rose-Hulman and some other schools do not have a specific essay requirement. The essay is optional, but I want to write one. Would an essay of why I want to study engineering in general be better than why I want to go to the school be stronger? Would the latter make me sound like a suck up? It also had no suggestions on the length; would asymptotically approaching 1,000 words too much? Most applications want around 500 words.

Edit: but an essay on why I want to pursue engineering is also broad even though I do have legitimate reasons.
