Free College-Planning Help for Teens with Cancer

A news release that crossed my desk this week may be of interest to CC parents whose teens are battling cancer and making plans to attend (and pay for!) college at the same time. The National GRACE Foundation (Growing, Recovering and Achieving College Education) and college cost-estimation expert Student Aid Services, Inc. have teamed up to help students with cancer (and their parents) find colleges that fit their career goals and bank account.

This initiative, which will be launched on May 1, will allow high school juniors and their families working with GRACE to receive a personalized College Cost and Planning Report. The Report will help them to compare their aid eligibility and out-of-pocket costs at 10 colleges that they are considering as well as to gather additional information about each school.

According to the information I received, The National GRACE Foundation was established in April 2011 by long-time college financial aid official Anthony Gallonio and his wife Michelle LaRiviere of Rhode Island to help pediatric cancer fighters to go to college. "Named for their daughter Grace Gallonio, who was diagnosed with cancer as an infant, the foundation provides free college-counseling services including assistance with applications and applying for private scholarships. In its first two years, the foundation served 300 high school students nationally and advocated for more than $100,000 in grants and scholarships for them.”

For more information about the free services for teens with cancer and to learn how to take part, contact Anthony Gallonio at 401-793-6337

Hmmm, running the net price calculators on the web sites of the various colleges?

Still, that can be helpful for many families, who know little about net price calculators and other sources of information about colleges.

It sounds to me like this program will give families more than just running a bunch of NPC’s for them. But, if someone wants to run 10 NPC’s for me and send me the results, I’ll gladly take it. ;)
