Free Credit Freezes & Unfreezes Coming

Just read that as of 9/21/2018, credit freezes and unfreezes will be free soon per federal law. Yay!

It’s about time! We froze ours years ago. If I still had minor children, I would freeze theirs asap.

We paid and froze ours after the Equifax breach—it was just one too many on top of Anthem and OPM! I’m glad it can be unfrozen and refrozen for free.

We have been repeatedly denied a Macy’s card recently because the accounts are frozen. It really doesn’t bother us much.

@HImom You can ask which credit bureau they use (they usually have a preferred one or 2) and do a 24 hour thaw with that company. We did that when Costco switched credit card providers. We were able to thaw online, and the freeze went back automatically after 24 hours.

Yes, but honestly we only shop at Macy’s about once or twice/year so don’t really care. We were trying to help the sales clerks by applying. I think they gave a quota. H had a card with them for decades but they closed it one day with no notice because we hadn’t used it often enough.

I just did this today. I froze my credit last year when I thought I had lost my passport and ss card. Found them the next day but I left my credit frozen - I figured, why not? Also it didn’t cost me anything to freeze credit, either due to state law (NC) or my advanced age.

So, I applied for a credit card a couple of weeks ago with a great mileage bonus and of course I got a letter in the mail telling me they couldn’t process the application because my credit was frozen, but they only needed Experian. So I went on the Experian website and got a one time single user pin which I gave over the phone to the credit card people and I was approved over the phone. So I got the credit card and my credit remains frozen. It was a very easy process.
