where can a kid with very high stats (straight A’s, 5’s on all APs, 2400 on SAT, 800s on all subject area SATs) get a free ride?

Well i know that St. Joseph’s College on Long Island gives a free ride to anyone with a 93 or above average… a bunch of my friends go there on full rides.

Look around on this site. Your topic is discussed at length.

Here’s a start:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/52133-schools-known-good-merit-aid.html

For automatic-for-stats scholarships, see this thread:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships.html

Of course, there are also competitive full ride scholarships at other schools, such as:

President’s at Georgia Tech
Park at NCSU
Robertson at Duke and UNC-CH
Morehead-Cain at UNC-CH
Drake at Berkeley for mechanical engineering majors

Some public universities have large scholarships available only to in-state students. So check your in-state public universities.

If the student is from a poor enough family, and gets into one of the schools known for very generous financial aid, s/he may get a full or near-full ride of need-based aid.

Pick one or two of the guaranteed free ride places as safeties, but definitely try for some of the competitive free rides at places you’d really like to go. Not all schools have merit aid, so be sure you apply where they do. Many schools have competitive scholarships and they tend to be a notch or two higher than the guaranteed places (BUT it will all depend upon what you are looking for as to whether they are better for you).

There is a separate thread if the student is a National Merit Semi-finalist.

Are you a likely NMSF? What was your PSAT?

When you say “free ride”, do you mean “free tuition” or free tuition, room, board, books??

Can your family contribute to costs at all? If so, how much?

What is your major?

Well i know that St. Joseph’s College on Long Island gives a free ride to anyone with a 93 or above average… a bunch of my friends go there on full rides.

that scholarship is NOT a “free ride”…it’s free tuition. And there’s a req’d SAT as well. A free ride is literally that…all costs are covered…tuition, room, board, books, fees, etc. And, any outside aid reduces the St John tuition scholarship amount.

You could have a chance for a full ride at Fordham.

Howard
UAB

My daughter got a 233, I think, on her PSAT, then a 2400 on her SAT. Is she not in contention for national merit because her PSAT was lower?

A 223 is great. She’ll make NMSF. Her PSAT doesn’t have to match her SAT at all.

If you go to the National merit forum here on CC, you’ll see the FAQ

Check out University of Miami and Tulane University

Cyneller…

Are you looking for ASSURED scholarships?

Some schools have highly competitive full tuition or full ride scholarships, so they may only award 1 or 2 scholarships from a pool of highly qualified students. These scholarships often look at more than just stats.

Some schools have ASSURED large scholarships for stats.

What are you looking for?

I’m thinking free ride (not just tuition, but expenses too). I don’t care if they’re assured; they could be competitive. Thx everyone for all the advice!

Oh, U of Miami has a scholarship that allows you to graduate in 2 years
