free test scores

i dont understand why the college board and act cant let you see the scores and then have your 4 free reports (even if they only gave a few days after). is it just a money thing? ie they know alot of people (like me) dont want to send them until we know what they are and they therefore get to charge me??

I’m guessing it’s to keep costs down. It has to be a lot cheaper for them to send scores to everyone–colleges and the students themselves–all at once as soon as they’re available, than to send them first to the students and then later to the colleges. It doesn’t seem like that big of an administrative burden, but a dollar or two times the total number of tests taken would add up to millions.

mantori, they go online first, thats why i thought just a few days grace time…they dont actually mail reports to the students for about 6 weeks, but are available on line in 2. we just got an email from sat reminding me i had until june 15 to request 4 free ones from last weeks satII, the results will be online on the 24th why not give until the 28th?

I hadn’t thought of that. Which leaves the obvious answer: It’s a way to make more money.

It is a administrative burden issue. It all gets processed at once. If they gave you until later to submit, then all the requests would be trickling in. It takes additional effort (costs) to process all the one-off’s.

That is also why they have to firm up your list of colleges BEFORE they start sending out all the scores. During normal testing season, kids needs the scores sent to colleges ASAP. If they waited for you to firm up the list AFTER scores are released to the students, then it would delay the batch reporting to the schools. As such, their systems are set up for the tests during the school year, and do not set up a special process for the last test of the year.
