An unfortunate fact of life at any University is that laptops are small valuable items, so they can end up lost or stolen. The University of Washington has released a free tool to help you recover a lost or stolen laptop. It installs a piece of software that periodically connects to the internet and allows you (but only you) to identify where the laptop is. A press release is at [Free Adeona service tracks stolen laptops | University of Washington](http://uwnews.org/article.asp?articleID=43037)

What if the person who steals it does a clean install of the OS, will Adeona still be on the machine? Probably not! Of course the thief will have to be smart enough to do it.

grasspuppet, if you read thru the info on the site you’ll see your suspicion is correct. A thief can remove or overwrite the SW. However your hope is that if your laptop is ever lost/stolen its by someone who just starts using their “free” machine or lists it on craigslist so you have a shot at recovering it. Its not perfect protection, but its better than nothing.
