I work a freelance job transcribing. Does this help my college application as any other “normal” job would? Would I be better off quitting and looking for another job? I have been doing this for a couple of months now, and I am a sophomore.
I know several people who do or have done transcription. That can be a pretty tricky job! If you like doing it, and you are making enough money for your purposes, don’t worry about dropping it for a different job.
@marco476 I’m currently writing a book based almost entirely on transcripts. A talented transcriptionist is worth their weight in gold. Because people use a lot of verbal “tics” (uh, um, you know) when they speak, and because they’re not spelling out difficult words, transcription requires a high degree of knowledge of the English language, including grammar and spelling. If you are transcribing anything technical, medical or business-related, that’s an even higher degree of proficiency. You should be proud of your work, and I hope you are getting paid properly for it. We pay $40 for a high-quality, 20-minute business-related transcript. Lastly, as soon as you turn 18, you should start a transcription company. As a freelancer, you have responsibility for billing and other business functions, correct? So, in other words, you can definitely present your skills favorably to a college. I am not sure if I can receive private messages yet, but please feel free to reach out with any questions. PS Transcription will soon be taken over by AI - just keep your eyes out for developments in artificial intelligence. But keep performing it as long as you are getting paid for it.
If you enjoy the job and it fits in with your schedule/life then do it. Any job would be valued by admissions officers.
In general I recommend you do what works for you. Don’t try to live your life for a college application.
It would be looked at the same as any job. That you were able to keep up with your academics while still spending X hours/week at a job.
