I am looking for a reliable set of plastic or corning containers that can go from freezer to microwave.

I am considering cooking a set of ~ 10-12 dinners for DS, bringing them over to his dorms every weekend to save in his freezer. DS starts med school this Fall and I want to do my utmost to ensure he eats healthy meals without having too many time-exhaustive demands of cooking on his hands.

Any advice from parents who have done this before would be greatly appreciated.

I heard news that you shouldn’t use plastic in the microwave…bad for the health. It is recommendable that you use glass containers instead of plastic.

If you’re going to take them to son, why not freeze them in any kind of container and then place the frozen meal in a microwave safe resealable bag or wrap. That way DS can just put them on a paper or plastic plate to microwave and won’t have to worry about washing the containers/returning them to you.

They are cheap. They can be reused, but if they get lost, it’s not the end of the world. The lids and containers stack. They go straight from the freezer to the microwave.

We’ve stopped buying permanent storage container and just load up on a couple convenient sizes of these things. They even make some with separate compartments for do-it-yourself frozen TV dinners, I think.

The other thing you might want to consider. Sarah Lee (and maybe others) have started selling cold-cuts in a flat, stackable freezer to microwave container. The cold cuts are nothing special, the plastic containers are really a convenient size and shape!
