Wish we had water in the door! But I love bottom freezer. So nice to have everything in fridge at non-bending height!
We finally gave up on trying to find a white French Door counter depth fridge. The companies all have the making of these on pause, and arenāt even taking orders.
BUT we found a great Whirlpool side by side white counter depth and supposedly itās being delivered Saturday! Stay tuned! Itās really fine and the configuration of the inside has really changed since our first side by side. We hope it really gets here.
So we need a new fridge too. Ours is now freezing our eggs. We (I) want stainless French doors with water and ice dispenser. Is it better to have one or two freezer drawers? Do we want counter depth? Thanks.
If I had to pick, I would go for one drawer - more inner space. The brackets etc. used to support two drawers take up a lot of useful space.
We were exactly in the same boat!
Our refrigerator was freezing, but thatās a lot better than getting not cooling at all ,and all your food spoiling That allowed us to survive for 2 months as we went through a fiasco with the repair company and finally deciding to get a new fridge. Then, we had to deal with the very low availability of essentially any model that we really wanted.
We finally got our first choice, which is a Bosch with 2 vertical fridge doors, a horizontal fridge drawer for produce etc, and the bottom horizontal drawer for the freezer. The water dispenser is on the inside, and we have an internal ice-maker with no dispenser.
As you can read from my comments on this thread, it was a HELL of an ordeal, but we finally got one by continuously looking, checking every big box and local retailer we could find. We got one of the last ones in the Bay Area and had it delivered in about 4 days after placing the online order. It was a complete stroke of luck that we got it. Other retailers (including HD) were saying it could be 2022 before we got it, as it was so back-ordered.
Try to stick it out as much as you can, since you have a fridge that is overcooling. So, donāt rush it if you can avoid it. In our case, as for the old fridge, it was basically an internal door between the freezer section and the fridge that wasnāt working. Since the compressor is tied to the freezer, thatās where the cooling came from, and the internal door between the two regulated the temperature in the fridge side. The parts were back-ordered, and since we had a home warranty, our cost to repair would have been less than $100 all in. However, the repair company proved to be so awful that we finally gave up and got the warranty company to cash us out on the repair, which we used to defray the cost of the new Bosch.
You can always turn off your fridge for a few hours to keep stuff from freezing (donāt open the doors)ā¦it aināt great, but it bought us time. And in this time of horrible supply chain issues, you need that time to get what you want.
Best of luckā¦I SINCERELY mean that, as we were in your shoes until just a few weeks ago.
ETA: on the counter depth, we had no choice, as thatās all we could install in the kitchen. It does limit your inside space, but consider what your family needs. For us, the counter depth one was fine. We donāt have all that much frozen stuff, so we opted for a smaller freezer and more fridge space (the top half with the vertical doors, and the first horizontal drawer).
What sold me on the Bosch (my wife was long sold on it) was the fact that it had two separate compressors, one for each of the fridge and freezer. To that extent, if we ever have a compressor failure, we hopefully will have another functioning compressor so that everything doesnāt get spoiled.
I would have to agree. Each drawer takes up inside storage space. In our case we wanted a fridge drawer and a separate freezer drawer, so our configuration is a bit different.
One thing: if you have a single large freezer drawer, make sure that you can get at all things you need without having to take stuff out.
Thanks. We do have a separate freezer in our basement, so Iām hoping that helps with the freezer drawer.
And Tada! Our new white counter depth side by side Whirlpool fridge was delivered today exactly as promised. We ordered it last Sunday! Itās plugged in and cooling down quickly. It looks nice in our kitchen (we have a Whirlpool stove so the handles are the same). This fridge is humming. The GE it replaced sounded like a train engine when running.
Iām sure I will get used to the side by side configuration again. And really, I only need to like this for 7 years, right.
The next owner of this house can replace all the (relatively new) appliances with stainless if they want to.
Congrats!!
Iām looking at a possible new fridge (awaiting repair person for a 12 year old, leaking LG but not too hopeful!). A few questions if I can revive the thread?
Background: our newish stove, micro, and dishwasher are all LG. Thinking we will be in our house another few years but not likely 5+. Iām keeping in mind resale (want buyers to be generally okay with fridge)
Curious if folks had any thoughts:
-
Is it important to match all appliances? (I donāt care but maybe thatās a thing with a lot of other peopleā¦?)
-
What is the minimum size for a reasonable, average kitchen fridge? The one we have now is 31 cu - gargantuan for our space (protrudes at least a foot past the adjacent counter) and for use (husband and I both not big cooks nor entertainers - thereās mainly beer and salad in there now ā¦
)
Thanks so much for any input!
Of course everyone will have differing opinions but thatās why itās good to do a CC āpollā!
For me matching brands doesnāt matter as much as style being relatively similar. Like same finish, tone of finish, etc. And re: size, I would rather have a fridge that fits the space and is not obviously too big/small for the space. If my kitchen refrig doesnāt meet our needs, Iād get an extra fridge for the garage or something before Iād put a huge too big for the space one in the kitchen.
None of our appliances āmatchā. We bought what we neede/wanted for each.
As for size, Iād go for best fit for your space. Fridges are most efficient when mostly full, so thereās no reason to buy more room than you need, especially if it feels big for the space.
Here is my opinion.

in my opinion, the brand name does not need to match but the color should. So if you have all stainlessā¦get stainless. If you have all black, get all black.

I would suggest getting a counter depth fridge that doesnāt stick out as much. Thatās what we have always had in this house and there was plenty of room in it even when all four of us lived here. We went from a side by side to a French door and back to a side by side. But all counter depth. Counter depth are a little smaller, but not by that much.
I donāt have matching appliances, although they are coordinating (stainless & black). They arenāt the same brand.
I donāt have a large kitchen. For me, choosing a counter depth refrigerator that fits in the space I have was important. I chose a model that suits my needs. If I needed more refrigerator space, I would buy an inexpensive refrigerator to put in the basement. As it is, I have a very basic upright freezer in my garage, because I need it.
I like to match the finish but we mixed and matched brands.
Also would recommend a cabinet depth fridge. Ours only has the doors sticking out past the counter. Mine is 21 cu ft and that is plenty for us and we are big cooks and entertainers.
I like a French door with freezer on the bottom.
Be conscious of the height of your space though as there is huge variety in fridge heights.
Same for match color but not necessarily same brand. I did buy extended warranty last time on my fridge (first time ever) and sure enoughā¦just a month before it expired I ended up with a brand new refrigerator. Best $250 I ever spent.
I think yes to matching finish, no to need to match brand, and something that fits the space (including closer to the counter and close to filling the existing space (not leaving a foot of space between fridge and cabinet if thereās one above, similar for sides, and if thereās not a cabinet above, make sure cabinets and fridge are close to same height).
We just got our whirlpool fridge. Itās simple with just freezer on top and fridge on bottom. Itās stated at 20 cubic feet but we are still adjusting to the way itās configured compared to our prior fridge.
We ordered from Costco on Friday and could have had it delivered on Tuesday but chose Wednesday. They carted off old fridge, which is what we requested. Itās been <24 hours and both fridge and freezer are in good temp zones according to the thermometers we gave in each.
Fridge was even on saleāeven with $199 delivery it was under $1000. We didnāt want nor get and water nor ice maker for fridge.
Thanks SO much for this feedback!
Yes, was def intending to match finish (fingerprint less stainless steel)- just didnāt know if anyone cared about exact match of handle shape etc.!
Glad to hear that 21 cu is sufficient. I was not part of decision-making for last fridge (āsurprise!ā) so I really want to be sure we get only what is needed this time.
Love the idea of a Costco fridge for less than $1,000!!
We have a counter depth side by side. The counter depth fridges tend to cost more, but the look is worth the extra cost, in my opinion. Having a fridge stick out a foot is a lot.
Ours was purchased in 2021, I think. It was a little less than $2000. For a counter depth, I think thatās what you will be looking at for price.
@Knowsstuff whats the name of the appliance place you have recommended (it was you, wasnāt it?)?
