French final exam complexities?

My D is going to an overseas department of France for a study abroad semester in the spring. On the school web site, the finals schedule is mentioned as being most of the month of June. As classes end in May, this is a considerable amount of time to hang around the country studying for exams. She needs to get back to this country for summer pursuits related to her major.

When I brought this up with a friend experienced in the French university system, he mentioned the two systems of exams. One being a major final only, and the other being exams throughout the semester, with a final being not necessary.

She has not been able to get information on which of these systems might apply to her situation, as emails are not being returned. The very few other American students seem to be unconcerned, and will stay on for June.

Has anyone here had experience with these differences in exams, in France or elsewhere? We need to buy a ticket and need this question answered to figure out dates.

Hi,

Unfortunately it will be at the whim of the professor as to what form of assessment and when. There will probably not be a single style but will vary from class to class. If she knows what classes she’s taking it would be worth looking to see if any info is posted from last year’s classes on the website. She could also write to the international office there to see whether there’s any policy on alternative assessment for international students to allow them to leave early (but this tend to be in the winter when term dates don’t match between universities around the world). But she may have to just accept that if she wants the credit she’ll have to stay for June. June exams are the norm in the French system so there may not be much sympathy for her.
