Freshman Advising at USC

Hi wanted to know how the advising is for freshman @ Viterbi. We would be internationals so will not make it to orientation in June/July. I assume Int’l orientation is mandatory which is held right before school begins.

In this case would son miss out on some important events mainly advising?

Pixeljig,
Students are taking finals. Commencement is coming soon. It may take some time before someone can answer your question.

In general, Viterbi has the First Year Excellence program which assists freshmen to connect to the university and Viterbi. It offers a variety of support services. More information on this program is available: [USC - Viterbi School of Engineering - First Year Excellence](http://viterbi.usc.edu/fye) .

The Klein Institute for Undergraduate Engineering Life provides student with a variety of activities to enhance their student experiences. It focuses on leadership development, servce learning and cross disciplinary opportunities. More information is available: [USC - Viterbi School of Engineering - kiuel](http://viterbi.usc.edu/kiuel)

There is an 800 number for Viterbi: 800-526-3347 .

Did you mean to say that you would not be attending the international orientation? If you are you will be meeting with your departemental advisor. if you are not going then please call Viterbi to get some advice.

By the way, my son is in Viterbi and he has had excellent advisement. Viterbi also offers many support services such as peer tutoring.

The freshman advisor for computer science is Julie from the FYE program. She’ll meet with all of the people she is to advise at the international orientation along with all the other orientation sessions. For the first semester, though, course selection within Viterbi is fairly straightforward. Registration at the international orientation won’t be a problem; some of the more preferable sections of some classes may be filled already, but it isn’t a big deal.

^^ By international orientation you mean in Hong Kong (July 30) or the USC campus one (which is right before college starts)? Son does not want to go to HK.

Just go both

Thanks!!

How is the FYE? Many Viterbi kids do this?

Dear CS mom,
All freshmen in Viterbi have an advisor assigned to them. For your son’s major it would be Julie Phaneuf. You can read about her in the FYE link posted above.

Meeting with your advisor is required, if only to get the registration hold released from your account. Typically they look over your schedule, tell you if they notice any problems, ask about your plans, etc. Very helpful to go talk to about all sorts of academic issues.

Yup GG, saw the FY link thanks for posting. He has emailed Julie. If there is no loss in going to HK I rather that he do that and not wait till August. Whatsay?

You think Julie will come to HK?
