Freshman courses/sections already "CLOSED" - how can this be?

I am in the undergraduate class of 2012, and as somebody who can’t place out of the foreign language requirement, I am looking to enroll in GER 101 this Fall. I am extremely keen on either the section that meets at 9:00-9:50 or the one that meets at 12:30-1:20 Monday to Friday. But since both these sections are marked as “CLOSED” on the Princeton Course Offerings website, it occurs to me to wonder if all the seats are already taken by sophomores. Or are they so marked because they are reserved for freshmen like me and because registration is not due to begin before September?

I really have no clue how a language course apparently suited for freshmen get filled out and “closed” even before freshman registration through SCORE becomes operative.

Can somebody please enlighten me?

Unlike Spanish or French, there are only a handful of sections for a language like German. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors have already picked classes for the fall semester and it is not uncommon to have a lot of upperclassmen in intro level language courses. I took ITA 101 my sophomore year and out of the fifteen people in my 12:30-1:20pm section only 5 or 6 of the kids were freshmen and there were two seniors and a graduate student in the class as well.

SCORE will reopen in the fall and people will undoubtedly drop classes. I’d recommend that you e-mail the German department and ask if there is a waiting list for the sections that you are interested in. In the event that space becomes available in those sections they will hold a spot for you.
