<p>Can’t help on why it’s asking you to download a file…but I know you can get to that particular thread easily by going to the Parents Cafe. It’s always one or two from the top.</p>

<p>Egg crate pad goes beneath the mattress pad since the mattress pad can be washed and the egg crate cannot be. Basically the egg crate is making the mattress softer and the mattress pad is protecting the entire bed from spills/dirt etc</p>

<p>Be sure to consider ear plugs, especially if your student will be traveling with a team or other college group. We pooh-poohed the idea for a long time until, after several bus trips with loud movies roaring at dawn, our daughter gave in and tried ear plugs instead of turning up her iPod. What a difference!</p>
<p>Something that locks, be it a file cabinet, foot locker, etc. Something that can’t easily be picked up and carried out. That will be to hold valuables that aren’t used all the time(such as cameras)or things that you don’t want hanging around the room if you go home for the weekend, to a football game, etc. Remember, most theft in dorm rooms is grab and run. Also, if you don’t know your roommate, you won’t know the people coming in and out of your room…</p>
<p>One thing to pack and insist your child take is a home first aid and sewing kit- bandaids, Tylenol, Sudafed, needle and thread… the things you have at home that you don’t want to have to go to a store for when you need them. When son was home for winter or spring break he asked for thread to match the huge pillow I had made for him so he could mend a bit of seam- I complied and then I fixed it myself when I discovered the rip this summer (so much for good intentions on his part, he didn’t follow through).</p>
<p>Use the lists found in CC and the ones from your child’s college. The sales and availability will come later- be patient for a few more weeks.</p>

We live in a very warm (desert) climate; and this will be my sons first experience with winter. He’ll be in The NE. I am contemplating between a down alterntive or down comforter, and wondering if there is a general idea if dorms are kept warm? or hot? Should I pick a year round weight, and he can add a blanket in the winter if he’s cold?

<p>my d’s upstate NY dorm was very warm - she never used a blanket under her poly- filled comforter - ask about the dorms on your S’s college specific site…</p>
<p>expatme - In the NW, we use down comforters even in the summer. I like down because it seems more adaptable to different temps, and more breathable. A good online source is thecompanystore.com - they also have Twin XL sheets.</p>
